So I have received an interview invite from Penn (yay!), and apparently they organize the interview dates by area of research interest, which in my case is neuroscience. But the problem is that this neuroscience interview date is November 19th-20th, which is one of the two dates I have been dutifully keeping open in case of a Tri-I interview. If I try to switch the Penn interview I will presumably end up interviewing with people outside of my area, which is undesirable.

SO, my question is the following: is there any way I can call/email Tri-I and tell them that IF they decide to give me an interview I would much prefer the October 30th date due to an unavoidable conflict on the other date?

On the one hand this seems not legit, as they have not even invited me yet and they probably don't like applicants telling them when they want to be invited, but on the other hand it seems like I am saving them a potential hassle of trying to reschedule me if they give me the November date and I tell them I have a conflict. By telling them early I am hopefully letting them know before October 30th is full (I was complete 9/3 so I don't know if they will get to me for October). In the end it's sort of analogous to an "in the area" email about the first date, which they are free to ignore, but I don't know how they would respond or if I would come off as obnoxious. Has anyone tried this, or does anyone familiar with Tri-I have any advice? Also do you think phone vs. email would make a difference in chance of success?

Thanks!

Figure it out when you get both invites. To specify a preference before even getting an invite is very presumptuous. Penn will also have another Neuroscience day in January if that has to be rescheduled. Scheduling issues happen every year--just go with the flow.
