Hi

I heard that some medical schools offer an extended program to slow the pace and ease the transition from college to med school. What schools offer this program? Is there an official name for it?

I am not sure what schools would call it, but there are some schools that will allow its students to "slow down" the first year and do a 5 year program. I think you can even slow the second year and do a 6 year program. I am not sure if students can choose to do these, or if they are kind of forced into it. A lot of times, these programs aren't used to ease students into medical school, but rather is used to help students who are having trouble with the classes and need extra time (or have failed a course or two and need to repeat it the year). You should try your hardest not to need these programs.

Medicine isn't Rocket Science. To come to think of it, some classes in med school were even easier than undergrad ones, such as differential-based physical chemistry. I just read Robbins, Rapid Review and listended to Goljan's audio and aced all the path stuff. If you study at least 2 to 3 hours a day for each subject, you should be fine. I can't guarantee High Honors or anything, but you should pass.

The two that come to mind are GWU and UMDNJ-RWJMS. I think GWU has the 5 yr option for easing into med school, whereas RWJ is really spreading out the first 2 years over 3 in order to do a dual degree program (or for other extenuating circumstances).

BU and GWU "decompress" the first year into two years for some students, although it's not clear if that's up to you to choose or if they tell you that you must go that route.

Western (DO) offers anatomy over the summer before first year to let you lighten up your first semester courseload or TA the course and make money during your first semester 👍

I think there are a lot more alternatives like this, but they often aren't advertised because, like an earlier poster said, some aren't an "option" you get to choose but one you get assigned to if you're in trouble.

I'm just interested because I am in absolutely no rush to finish and start working.. And I feel that I would do better in my academics if I can spread it out over time

I would be concerned at how you may be perceived by residency program directors. If you need to slow down the pace, it may call into question your ability to excel in graduate medical education.

Wayne State does this. I think they call it the Modified program or something like that. my interviewer mentioned it to me and I must have appeared a bit insulted, as she quickly clarified that they mention it to all nontrad interviewees who have been out of school for a while.

University of Minnesota Medical School has a Flex MD option where you can "slow down" just about any part of the curriculum. Most use it to do research/get dual degrees, but some slow it down to work while in school while supporting a family. If you were doing any of these I don't think a residency director would look down on you, but if you weren't, then maybe they would, idk.
