So does anyone know if there is a policy against external catheter use on step exams if are worried about needing to go but not wanting to lose time? Serious question here. I'm sure I'll get made fun of but I'm okay with that. Should be funny 🙂

who would even know you are wearing a texas catheter?

You have allotted break time + lunch time. Not taking them will not add to how much time you can use to actually answer questions, but finishing questions faster will add to your break time

As said previously, unlike the NBME's, on Step 1, you have break time that you are given to use the restroom or get a snack/lunch. Not using this time just means you finish the test faster, it doesn't give you any additional time for questions.

Using a catheter would be challenging and stupid, regardless, as you are patted down prior to entering the testing area. I assume the bag would be detected at some point.

I'll give a serious response. You can take a 10 minute break between every section. If you have to go to the bathroom greater than every hour, you should see a doctor about your bladder dysfunction; you'll need to before 3rd year starts.

Using a texas cath is unneccessary... but just for the sake of the mental exercise (and comedy), if you are going to do it, you should probably get several and practice wearing them all day long for a while leading up to the test. I can't imagine trying to take the test and having something foreign in my underpants all day.

So they pat you down and find a catheter? You say, "I have a catheter for medical reasons." You think the Prometric people are going to call you out? No way.

That and, while it's been a few years, I don't recall getting a pat down on any of my steps.

Now if there is a device malfunction during the test, you'd have a problem...

They do pat you down these days (I blame the hand jibber for not getting a 280 on step).

They might require you to have medical documentation or something.
