I'm wondering which vet schools in the US require a practicum or externship in a private practice as part of their final year in vet school (excepting Western, which has all of their 4th year rotations in private practice)? I know it is optional at many schools, but I'm wondering which schools require it, and how for how long (weeks? months?).

Information from Canadian, UK, and Australian schools would be interesting too, for comparative purposes too.

Thanks in advance.

NCSU requires a small animal externship (minimum 2 weeks) from all SA and mixed focused students. This does not necessarily have to be in GP and could be in ER or specialty work. These students are also required to complete the GP rotation on campus (though I suspect that although the fundamentals are some what similar to the real world, because the clients are all CVM personel and the costs are very low, its just not the same -consults are also like $15 too). Students can take a maximum of 6 weeks externships during 4th year.

SGU does not have any specific externship guidelines and instead defaults to the clinical year school's requirements.

At every UK school 26 weeks of externships are required by the RVCS for graduation. RVC does allow some of those weeks to be completed on campus at the various hospitals.

UTK requires 4 weeks of externships at your place of choosing (private/corporate/educational, small/large/equine/exotics/mixed - it doesn't matter). Most people go to private practices, but those that know they are doing internship/residency might go to other veterinary schools.

Don't they require three total externships (of which 1 has to be in a for-profit GP clinic)? I mean, I did 5 externships, but I felt like at least 3 were required?
You know I have no idea. Right now I'm just dealing with the lack of externship opportunities since they are no longer allowing lab animal peeps like myself to do the research track, so the amount of possible externships I was hoping to do has been dramatically reduced. I don't know what the minimum requirement is, so you're probably right?
