So heres my dilema Im a future applicant with avg grades and havent taken my MCAT's yet I have afew EC's but am looking for some more [currently doing my post-bac work as well]. My dilema is do I go with more community based organizations in doing volunteering [where i really feel like im doing something i enjoy and make a difference] or the hospital route [which so far no hospitals have even gotten back to me]. I would like to do more than just sit at a desk and say elevator is to your right etc.

While I still need to do DO shdowing [i guess I will try to spend a few months next yr doing that] I want to have some solid extra curic. that make me stand out but also things that I enjoy so whats a girl to do? Also my mom-fri schedule is tight so Im trying to find something I would enjoy and would hold well to an admissions officer [esp. at NYCOM]. I know healthcare exp. is pref. but no places seem to get back to me and I still want to do something for more than just a space on my application

Thanks for eevryones 2 cents in advance and have a great holiday wknd

I'm confused. Why are you waiting to hear back from hospitals? Did you go to the volunteer department and talk to one of the coordinators/directors?

Preferably you do some consistent hospital work, some community service work (especially since you seem passionate about it), AND do something non-medical because I keep hearing from people how the non-standard, non-medical stuff keeps coming up in their interviews...

I believe it -- If I interviewed 200 applicants, I'd want to talk about something other than hospitals and hospice too.

Having some sort of hospital volunteer/EC work is good to have. But also consider, as you already pointed out in your post, community projects and organizations. Things like Habitat for Humanity and community outreach programs are just as good - if not better than volunteering at the hospital and answering the telephone at the front desk. They make for good conversation points on your interview trails.

Maybe, if your time scedule allows you to, perhaps you could volunteer with your township EMT group. They might take volunteers if they need them - and some townships will actually pay for your education to be an EMT-B if you are volunteering with the squad.

Visit your local churches and grab all those wierd flyers they got on the tables where they ask for volunteers to do soup kitchens, nursing home visits, community food banks and items such as these. You might be able to find something that fits your time schedule.

Best of wishes and Godspeed:luck:

My dilema is my grades arent great and I want to stand out a bit more w/ my volunteering as well as enjoy what I do and not just have the cookie cutter hospital volunteering. Should I focus more on health care related or just general volunteering of things enjoy and really make a difference as opposed to giving someone directions to the cafeteria in a hospital setting.
I would love to do an EMT thing but cant b/c of physical limitations [surgerues etc] and while I know health care experience is important I would rather do more community service that I enjoy and actually help than being a robot in a hospital. I called emailed, wrote many hospitals [about 1/2 a dozen] no responses and I want to sttart some new vollunteering now that I can do consistently for a 12-18 months so thats why Im asking these questions. Thanks all and have a great holiday wknd

Whats a gal to do?

Are you in college or school right now? Maybe there are school organizations that work with local public schools where you can go tutor kids in mathmatics and reading. I really enjoyed doing that, it was great working with little kids and getting away from the world of hemoglobin and beta chains🙂

If your in in big city, maybe you could volunteer with student groups that work with inner city public schools.

Im doing my post-baac work now, actually I really like that idea esp. since most of my volunteer work has been with kids or senior citizens if anyone knows of any programs like that in the Long Island - NY area please let me know.
Great idea thanks again
