BACK IN THE GOOD OL' DAYS (i.e. Uni and high school) I did a lot of extra-curriculars and hobbies; I used to play tennis, practice piano, volunteer, etc.
However, now that med school has started, I've started to do these less and less, which is starting to worry me; I don't want to seem like the type of student that studies all the time. In fact, I don't even think I am that type of student, I just feel like I don't have as much access to things anymore. Also, I realized I didn't have as much time as before, and have started to do everything in a very stream-lined and efficient manner, so I feel like I'd also want to start a hobby that is useful as a skill as well (I have music as my free, relaxing hobby haha)

The point is, I feel like I want to start up extra-curriculars and get some new hobbies. I was wondering what you guys are passionate about and love to spend your free-time on?

Shopping. It is something I am passionate about. Chasing bags and shooz that are limited edition.

Now for my serious response- Pilates. Discovered it in dental school, sort of got into it, forgot about it when SHTF and residency happened, been really into it again for like a year now, seriously considering taking training to become a Pilates instructor too, now 😀

Do you find you have enough time to be an instructor?? ._.

I currently work six days a week, but that will be changing in the next 6-8 months so yes, I think I will. Even if I continued working this much, the demand for lessons in the evenings and on Saturday afternoons and Sunday's is pretty high.

I rock climb 10-12 hours a week and do HIIT 3-4 times a week. One of our residents volunteers at the Zoo. A couple others started their own device/tech company. We are all surgical residents and work 70-100 hours a week between clinical duties and studying. We do less than we would if we were doing something else, but we get by.

I've always wanted to try to climb some rocks, then I get scared >< and the harness things scare me too

currently a 4th year going into PM&R. kept up with bodybuilding throughout med school and in retrospect it was instrumental in helping me maintain my sanity. also scored very well on my step 1 (240+) and step 2 (260+), so it is doable with time management

I hear qbanks are a good extracurricular!

Srsly though, you can take 5-10 hours a week to do something you like as long as you are strict and efficient with your time, Just plan it into the schedule! You definitely want to work on the work-life integration and not just let everything pass you by. Many people at my school were D1 athletes in college, so playing sports is a big thing, music is big, video games are big. Just have a little fun for yourself.

I've revamped my schedule to always have free time for my hobbies. Right now, I'm focusing on getting back into playing the guitar and the drums, and weight training so I can become strong and swole. Once I'm comfortable with my knee post-meniscus tear, I want to get back into playing soccer again.

My other hobby is trolling.

No! Rock climbing is the best. It works every muscle you have in weird and unpredictable ways. Start with a top rope belaying class (where they have the rope keeping you safe from above) or just start with bouldering (where you scurry along a few feet off the ground trying to follow predefined routes). So much fun.

out of curiosity, are you in any type of relationship, have any children, etc? just curious to see how peoples significant others handle hobbies whenever you're already gone that many hours a week.

Married for 5 years. No kids. My wife rock climbs with me. We do pretty much everything outside of work together.

Mentioned this in another thread, but guess you didn't see it. You were an expert tailor at the age of 6, to establish your suturing skills, no?

We did have a sewing class in like 4th and 5th grade, but if I remember, I was pretty bad at it.

that just won't do. we had another thread about people taking up sewing to get better at suturing, so go in and lecture your students about how they suck at suturing since they aren't betsy ross

Awwwww 🙂

I don't think things would work any other way. Relationships require time and energy. You can't be absent all the time and expect things to simply work out. When you have two professionals working 50-80 hours a week, we found that you have to keep rather organized.

Maximizing time together is key. We share hobbies and pretty much get into whatever the other person is interested in. Thankfully, from movies, tv shows, sports, hobbies etc, we overlap almost 100%. And then meals, if I'm off, I make sure that I'm at her work for lunch and more often, when she has time off or I'm stuck at the hospital late she comes to the hospital to grab a bite. (This has also reduced our costs significantly by decreasing the number of meals bought at work).
