I'm going to try to keep this as anonymous for my school as I can. My class got the short end of the stick with admin changing schedules for the following years below mine. We effectively have about 3 weeks for dedicated board study after classes (not to mention a test every 3 days after mid February). I understand that it is possible to take an extra month of some type if need be for boards studying (similar to if you failed your Comsae), but push rotations back a month. Is this seen as an actual "leave of absence for academic reasons", and if so, is it a big deal when applying to residency that would hinder acceptance into Fm or EM programs?

Thanks!

3 weeks for dedicated board study sounds awful.....the same thing happened to the class above me and roughly 30% failed comlex first time. They also had a lot of other things stacked against them but still. I feel like if you know you are not prepared taking an extra month and passing first time is way better than failing the first time, being pulled out of rotations and having to start studying all over.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think it's a LOA in the same sense as if you took a year off/deceled. Tons and tons of student delay rotations for a month for extra board study time. Usually they can still graduate on time. If that constitutes a red flag, then a crap ton of students would have red flags.

At my school it's possible (but complicated) to get your vacation month moved to your first rotation of third year and get extra study time that way, without technically going off schedule.

Unpopular opinion here, how many hours are you spending to study for class exams? Is it possible to cut them down and can you still pass doing that? I would start studying for board now and you should still have enough time with those 3 weeks rather than push the rotations back.

You should be studying for step 1 now pretty hard. By the time break roles around after 2 weeks of dedicated studying I was ready to get it over with

How hard is hard right now? I am trying to figure out the right balance with studying for boards and class.

If you can trade your elective rotation for that extra month of board study, by all means do so.

When I studied for it I put the minimum into class enough to pass. I would cram for class exam 2-3 days then back to board study. You should probably get through uworld once and a comlex bank once and FA 2-3 passes before dedicated study. Just my 2¢ though. Everyone is different
