I was wondering how important are extracurriculars for residency applications. I am pretty involved in a few organizations right now but they do take a lot of time, especially since many are leadership roles. Would it be more beneficial for me to drop some leadership roles and focus more on research?

I would say it depends on what those organizations are.

For instance, I have a crazy hobby that takes over 40 hours a week to do at times. It isn't medicine related at all...not in the slightest. That being said, pretty much every interviewer has brought it up to talk about. I think they are more interested in that than my published research, or my high USMLE scores.

So its hard to say. Do you have any research? Ie. have you proven you are interested and can do it? Then I say keep on doing what makes you happy.
