Hey guys,

I recently graduated high school, but by the college courses I've taken at a local CC, I am really at least a sophomore in college. However, despite me being so ahead, I haven't done any kind of volunteering or research, and I strongly doubt I will be getting any this summer. Also, I don't really know where to go to volunteer besides a hospital. What are other good places to volunteer? What I am trying to ask is will I have enough time to get a substantial amount of volunteering/research by the time I apply to med school (If I decide that is what I want, I'm not sure yet)?

I say its good to have more then a year of volunteering and research at one place, and a good amount of clinical experience too, by the time you apply. And to be continuing some of that while you interview ... so if you're planning on applying summer of Junior year, you're pretty clsoe to that, I'd say start as soon as you can, if you can in September, you're pushing it, but with good numbers, you should be okay.

Why would I apply junior year? I have at least two more years left, because I'll be staying one more year at CC, and then I'll transfer the next year. Can you give me examples of good places where I can get volunteering/clinical/research opportunities? Do I have to do all three?

Look for hospitals that have a specific pre-med volunteer program where you are able to do more than a normal volunteer. Also, if your grades are good, look into summer internships where you can do research. These should both be easy to do if you live near a large city.

Clinics and nursing homes also take volunteers who get a lot of patient contact.

After transferring to the university, there should be able to find plenty of professors who will consider taking you on for a research experience.
