Anyone have any good ideas for fairly original/impressive extracurriculars during a year off while working as a molecular biology tech. (also I’m poor as hell so I can’t go climb Mt. Everest or travel to Europe, etc.)

original? impressive? Do you have time to train for the winter olympics?

Focus on your current interests...whether it's a sport, or art, or a community service, or whatever it may be...and nurture it and share your gifts with other people. Stay consistent.

My motto is whatever you do...make sure you're totally involved in it.

What I want to know is how did you get your job. I applied to those jobs for a whole year and I got nothing out of it!!!!!!!!!! I guess it does not help that I do not have a degree in a basic science.

What do ya suggest I do?

You needn't be original or impressive, just be dedicated and truly excited about whatever it is that you do. Aim for 3 hours/wk for as long as you live in the area (think long-term commitment).

Service to the community of some kind might be a good balance with a lab job. Contact a social service agency or a member of the clergy in your community and describe the type of group you'd like to work with (kids, battered or abused women, the mentally ill, adults trying to learn to read or to learn English as a second langugage, the dying). It should be relatively easy for you to find a group that needs your help.

Having a long term commitment (not just 2 hours a week for 3 mos) and, if possible, showing leadership skills is a plus.
