I read a lot of posts that mention extra-curriculars as an important part of your application. I had thought that one of the great things about applying to residencies is that you could finally leave bake sale experiences at the door. Can anyone throw out some specific examples here - i.e. are IM programs looking for community service, interest group involvement, etc. Thanks!

Since you'll be spending a lot of time at work with fellow residents and attendings, most programs want to know if you have a personality and a life. I do hope you did something other than study in med school.

Programs want to make sure you'll get along with all the residents and faculty- usually people who fit this mold tend to have a life as well, so it kind of goes hand in hand. But, EC's don't carry the weight they did in med school apps. Programs seem more concerned with knowledge and med school success. So even if you didn't achieve sainthood while in med school for all your good deeds, but you have outstanding number, as long as you prove to them during the interview you're a normal person, you're fine.
