Hello, I would like to know if anyone out there has originally been failing one semester and still got into medical school after that one semester? Basically I am a nontrad student working on taking prereq. to get into med school. This is my second degree,so it is a struggle financially, etc. I just received my grades for one of my biology classes that I need with a lab and I received a D+. I was pulling a B until obviously after the final it brought me down and then I guess with the curve. What should I do? I can not afford to go to school after this summer. I was originally taking another biology class with a lab over the summer just for the hell of it. Do you think that if I do well in that class I still have a chance of admission for 2007?

Well if you are failing one semester thats a pretty big red flag. But that depends on what you mean as failing. We can't give you much input when you only provide us with meager amounts of info.

If you got a D+ in a science class, you should retake it. For the most part, med schools want to see an upward trend, rather than downward. From what I can get from your post, you have one semester left, and just recently had a failing semester. So thats not too good. Even if you were to do well, its still not a sure thing.

That was tasteless. If they want to get in, they need to bring their GPA up even if it takes 2-3 years to do so.

They need to do extremely extremely well on the MCAT and mature academically. That's waht they need to do.

True story, but my former MCAT instructor failed gen chem 3 times and had 8 F's on his transcripts and started at 1. something as his GPA. He went to Navy for 2 years and learned to discipline himself enough to get back into the whole college thing and get his GPA with 3.9 Postbac GPA. He then got a 37N on his MCAT and got into medical school, and had 4 interviews.

Take home message = show SIGNIFICANT improvement over a long period of time (e.g.: one semester of 4.0 does not cut it) in classes, mentality and MCAT scores.

Agree with this. Admission in 2007 is likely not in the cards for the OP -- but s/he can get there eventually. Probably the best route is to retake the course for a better grade, supplement with some upper level bios in which s/he does well, and maybe go the DO route, as they will use the retake rather than average in the D grade.

Have you thought about the Caribbean?

If you're failing your science courses, retake them and apply for DO schools. For DO schools, your new grade replaces your old one, not averaged in like for MD schools. It's a nice little loophole =)

I'm not sure I'd call it a loophole. I'm pretty sure that it is by design that AACOMAS (DO application) replaces grades rather than including all grades. If you ask me, thats how it should be. However, I am biased because my AACOMAS GPAs were both about 0.5 point higher than my AMCAS submitted GPAs simply for that reason. I should also note that all replaced grades were courses taken a long time ago and had nothing to do with pre-medical preparation.

To the OP, retake those courses you've failed. Like nvshelat said, for osteopathic schools only your most recent grade is factored into calculations. Life is not over, you just have to work on your study habits to ensure you succeed. It doesn't get easier once you're in medical school...
