Does anyone have any ideas on dealing with eye fatigue?

I spend about 10 hours a day looking at my computer screen and about 14 hours a day under fluorescent lights. I also have an eye disorder that only allows me to use one eye at a time. Combine all these together and I am in pretty much in constant pain.

It helps to dim my computer and to turn off the main lights in my house at night when I'm studying there but I'm still under fluorescent light at class all day and where I study at night.

Any and all ideas would be appreciated!

Sounds like me.

That's why in class I do handwritten notes, and when I need my comp, I make sure I take at least a 15 minute break every hour away from it...whether it go make tea, or play with the dog, I have to rest my eyes...

I have also heard the ipad screens are easier on the eyes??? Plus the ipad can record lectures, so you can simply put your headphones in, and just listen again rather than strain your eyes at the comp?

I use a program called F.lux on my laptop that adjusts the color of the screen to better match ambient lighting. It's really made a difference for me.
Might be worth looking into?

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for... but have you looked into vision therapy? My sister went to a vision therapist when she was younger to retrain her eye muscles to work together. They can do some pretty cool stuff, and should at least have good suggestions for eye fatigue.

Have you looked into the cost of printing out all of your notes? It might add up to a few hundred dollars, but that would be totally worth it if it means that your eyes aren't aching all the time. (and go to your local garden center to plant some trees to make up for your paper use, lol)

I feel like I have been getting something like this recently... my vision when looking at the computer is starting to get blurry and my eyes seem dry ... mostly after a long day.

Im not too sure what to do about it... I feel like I need time off away from work, studying and driving... and mooore sleep!

Do any of you wear contacts? When I wear contacts, my eyes start to hurt after about three hours on the computer already. When I know I'm gonna be working on the computer for a long time, I now wear glasses. My eye doctor told me to do so and I feel so much better that way!

Unfortunately, taking notes on my computer is really the only option for me. I am a very slow writer but extremely fast typist and our professors FLY through our lectures! Not sure if it is vet school in general or the fact that our professors are freaked out that they get 50% less lecture time with this new curriculum but my fingers sometimes cramp up from all the typing that I do in class! I can't imagine trying to write it! It also wouldn't work because a lot of the time, our lecture slides aren't uploaded until a few minutes before class. I do print them out with my notes on them to study off of later, though. 😳

All of our lectures are podcasted as well so I do relisten but maybe I should relisten with the notes printed out instead of relistening while looking at the screen. I find it interesting that they say the iPad is better for your eyes. I have one but I hardly ever use it. (slow internet at home makes syncing notes difficult)

Just donloaded it and using it now. It IMMEDIATELY helped! It's a slightly more "rosie" color now but it isn't "dimmed" which made me squint. Thanks - hopefully this will help!

I've actually considered it. Maybe there are strengthening exercises or something? My eyes go get red but the worst part is that they are just plain achey and painful.

I think part of the extreme fatigue I get is that one eye is doing all the work but there is nothing I can do to change that! (I've had 3 eye surgeries as a kid so this is no new thing - vet school has just made it incredibly harder!)

nope. :/

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I'm excited about trying f.lux! Keep them coming- the more the merrier!!! 🙂

It's not the new curriculum, they just do that. Same with lecture slides, btw - for all the complaining some people did about the slides not being up early enough - ours are generally not up any earlier before class and they've been doing the same lectures for like 10 years.

Awesome. So glad it seems like it might help. I think someone posted about it here, and it's basically made a huge difference for me. Used to get headaches from being on the computer a lot, especially in the evening, and haven't had any problems since I started using it.
Plus it's free, which is always great!

downloaded f.lux too, its kinda odd looking at first, but my eyes are more comfortable... thanks kakurubird 🙂

Did the same, and agree. I feel like it keeps changing color, like every 30 seconds? Or is that just my imagination now?

It shouldn't be changing colour constantly. Your install is probably screwed up if it is visibly flickering like that - should just alter when you shift from night/day, you turn it off, and sometimes when you stop/start a new program.

Should probably see an ophthalmologist about it, just in case. I was having flickering in my vision in one eye, and chalked it up to eye fatigue, etc. for awhile. When I finally got it checked out, it was actually due to increased intracranial pressure! I doubt that's your issue, but they told me that whenever you have a change in your vision (other than something like needing a prescription change), you should get it checked out. So, better safe than sorry.

Thank you! My eyes have been killing me and I noticed an immediate difference.

I think it might just be an angles thing- computers on my lap, so moves when I type. And it goes from brighter to pink depending on the angle I'm holding it at. When I type, its brighter, when I'm not, its pinker. Will have to get used to that or start using a desk lol
