I'm in the market for an eye tracker for research I'm working on. Do any of you have positive or negative recommendations about units you've used? There are a lot of them out there but without a hands on look its hard to tell how good they are.

Depends on goals, but I like Eyelink.

Tobii is user friendly to set up, but a pain in the ass to actually export and analyze. Their hardware is okay, but their software is horrific.

Big questions to ask yourself - accuracy (chin rest or other fixed head position) vs naturalistic. How fancy you want to get with analysis and how comfortable you are with complex data. These are key points that can guide you to at least the broad classes.

Tobii is probably fine if you want to run a dot probe task and get initial fixations or tag gross regions of a scene. I would not use it for fine grained processing of complex scenes you are planning to build computational models around.
