Ironically, reducing radiology numbers is what radiologists are asking for right now, so it might serve them well. He's vague, however, about what "up in the ether" means. The lawyers will never allow final reads to be conducted off U.S. soil or, as Panda Bear MD once put it, a radiologist on U.S. soil will be required to sprinkle holy water on it.

"prices will go through the floor"

I sure hope not...

There is no one out there sitting around all day long sipping coffee making money hand over fist. Reducing the number of radiologists would simply raise prices, see the early part of the last decade. Starting a radiology spot market would in my mind would simply drive up prices. Dealers would enter the market and add to cost through the bid ask spread. Also it would remove the socialist style of reimbursement that is currently used in this country. What I mean by that is, would you ask the same payment rate for reading a post op whipple noncon belly ct as you would for a stone study in a 30 year old? How about the same rate for a head ct at 2 am vs 10 am? This would have drastic effects on the way care is provided. Turn around times would go out the window in a lot of cases, and you might have some cases that cost so much to read that they go unread. Never mind the fact that he completely discounts the fact that large costs that go into radiology are on the technical side as opposed to the professional side which this marketplace wouldn't address.

I'm all for his ideas as I think it would be a huge boon to radiology. Cost going through the floor however I think would be the exact opposite thing of what would likely happen.

While I'm not really an Emanuel family fan necessarily, he has some great ideas in this video. I think we should still limit residency positions like we currently do as Emanuel says. It's probably better to have some type of physician shortage. Also, if Emanuel says we need less anesthesiologists and radiologists, then that just about scratches those specialties off of my list. He is a powerful figure in American health care and he has some pull on the purse strings, so any med student would be wise to listen to him - no matter how much you may disagree with him.

Based on the tone of his discussion of how we "need less radiologists and anesthesiologists," he clearly has an bitter axe to grind against his colleagues in anesthesia or radiology. Reduce the amount of radiology spots... I will take my talents to another non-primary care field. Way to solve the problem Dr. Emmanuel. He can think about how we less radiologists next time he orders that CT or Upper GI and wants it promptly read. Once again, this field of "colleagues" is full of unprofessional hypocrites.

I agree, reduce training positions and eliminate the foreign rad loophole and maybe the job market wouldn't be in the sh*tter! Thanks Zeke

He didn't say NEED less. He means pay less.
