So I am looking for some advice about what I should expect when I attempt to get funding through the F30 with NIAMS.

I searched the NIH statistics showing active F30 grants for NIAMS and failed to find any active or past F30 grants funded in the past couple years. Not only that but all of the grants out there appear to be basic bench science work focused on molecular/cell/biochem projects. My projects deal with biomechanics and clinical research.

I am not at a big name school, I had a bad grade or two in undergrad, had a bad MCAT score, great board scores, mentor has decent funding record, and have decent medical school grades.

Do I even have a shot at this grant with my research being biomechanical and clinical based?

What do you think my chances are with this institute? any suggestions for other funding sources?

Some institutes decided some years ago to quit the F30 mechanism. NINDS is another example. Last December, Francis Collins accepted some recommendations from the NIH Research Workforce report and requested that all NIH institutes give out F30s. Several NIH Directors are not in agreement with the spirit of this. In their view, their institute is not there to pay for medical school. Furthermore, as one NIH Director told me, they told us to restart the F30 mechanism, but they did not tell us how many F30s to award. (i.e.: one every 5 years would comply).

I am not familiar with the policies of the NIAMS. I suggest that you call their NIH Program officer and ask them whether they are accepting F30s now or in the near future.

I just got a reply back this morning, quick response surprisingly. They just started accepting applicants so he was unsure of my chances of success, but did state their pay lines range between outstanding and excellent. What does that mean exactly?

That your chances are between 1/outstanding and 1/excellent.
