Hello,
I am a 2nd year and am gonna step 1 in June 2011. Therefore, should I get 2010 edition and study along with my organ sys classes or wait till Jan to get the new edition? Some thoughts, anyone?
Thanks

I'd see if you can bum a copy off a 3rd/4th year and then get a new one when it comes out in (alternatively, you could pick up a cheap copy if that's an option). I ended up having both an 2009 and an 2010 for an exam this year and thought it was nice to be at least somewhat familiar with the format and content before the 2010 came out.

Eh, personally I think you'd be fine with 2010 and using it throughout the year. FA really only becomes useful when you've gone through it and marked it up with your own notes, additions, etc.. to fill in the gaps and then go back through it a few times as a guide/framework for review.

So if you can get 2010 now, by the time dedicated board review time comes around you should have a fully annotated review book that IMHO would be more useful than a slightly updated 2011 edition without any of your personal additions. Plus the errata list for 2010 should already be fairly complete and you can just quickly go through and make those changes instead of last minutes checking for updated 2011 list. Some mistakes don't get fixed from year to year so don't assume than an error from 2010 will have been fixed in 2011.

My suggestion would be to get 2 versions, one to use with classes (doesn't matter what year), and then 2011 for when you're ready to buckle down for boards in the spring.
I have 2009 and have been annotating it as I go through classes. It's great because I annotated while things were fresh in my mind so I have some pretty good explanations. I'll get 2011 when it comes out and transfer the relevant annotations to it, as well as all the new stuff.

Ps a new 2009 is really cheap on Amazon.

agree w/drdrtobe and much of what has been said. get 09 or 10 now, put annotations in while they're fresh (keep one color for all your school annotations). you need to be seeing this book for the first time way earlier than may of next year. and don't go crazy on what you add, you don't need too much detail for step 1, but you need to see FA several times before step 1. as soon as 11 comes out, transfer everything and as soon as possible so you're not wasting time doing that close to the boards. then i suggest (and others may not agree) DIT, at which point you will go thru 11 again, using a different color to annotate DIT stuff in there, much of which is very hi yield. then, as you go thru kaplan or usmle world questions and answers (and if youre a DO student, Combank), add any pertinent info from those answers in as well, in a different color. i know it sounds like a rainbow of color, but i think it works well, esp if you have neat handwriting. try something that doesnt smear too bad, like staedtler triplus fineliners. try to get thru FA at least 3 times. if you need to supplement, pick highly recommended resources (eg Goljan audio, again, in a different color) but only 1 or 2, maybe 3. don't spread yourself too thin. goal is try to have FA be annotated so well its the only thing you need to review come boards crunch time.

i agree with the last two posts, depending on your schools exams FA may or may not be that beneficial but its still good to familiarize yourself with an older edition and then grab the current edition the january of the year you are taking the exam. Personally i got an 08 edition and a 2010 later for board study, my school exams has a lot of high yield so FA was very useful for quick review before exams.

+1
This is exactly what I'm doing.

When I took my step 1 (2009), I actually used the 08 version. I used FA throughout MS2 and annotated it along the way.
By the time USMLE study time came around, I could not part with my FA and just bought the 09 for updates.
I ripped out any updated pages or just made additions into my older FA.

DIT makes a list of the updates every year: http://doctorsintraining.com/USMLE/step-1/whats-new-first-aid-2010/

The 2011 edition will not be a 20th anniversary edition, no matter how hard it tries. That is something special.😍
