Shouldnt a distal lesion at the wrist (carpal tunnel) cause ape hand while a proximal lesion (supracondylar fracture) cause ulnar deviation of wrist with flexion ?

i believe it is a flipped in FA's musculo skeletal section

another interesting thing that i noticed was they took out some useful info from 2009 edition but they also added some useful stuff in 2010

Truly remarkable indeed. I hope people didn't actually believe the typo 😉

I don't know what they removed from 2009 but the things they added in 2010, means I gotta borrow the book from someone. Someone posted a link on this forum which showed the extra stuff that they added, such as the drug Bosentan.

Yep, looks like you guys are right. The description of ape hand on the next page proves its backwards.

actually that page in FA about the median nerve/ulnar deviation is a common complaint, do a search in google or something and it will come up. i remember seeing that and saying how did FA not fix that, but I'm sure many people have brought it to their attention over the years, but they've refused to fix it in each edition, i can almost guarantee the same mistake will be in 2011.

For ulnar nerve distal lesion it also says it's pope's blessing/hand of benediction. Isn't hand of benediction a distal median nerve lesion where your 4th and 5th digits are flexed, but your 2nd and 3rd are paralyzed (loss of lumbrical 1,2 / median nerve)?

I spent forever trying to figure out those two pages, ugh I hate that section of first aid with a passion. They basically copied the chart from usmle road map and its not flipped in there so I just don't get it. Also does anyone else find all the things like pope's blessing, ape hand, ulnar claw, median claw whatever else there is confusing b/c I for one have no idea what the pope looks like when he blesses people and it seems like there are a lot of different takes on what a lesion would cause depending on the book you look at. Also is an ape hand supposed to refer to an atrophied thenar muscle group or to a thumb that is kind of just held next to the palm and can't abduct or what?? Who knows ugh, whatever I'm sure any question is going to be numbness of the first three fingers = carpal tunnel or something anyways and not "patient presents to the ED with a hand of benediction"
