Is a prophy considered general use? I'd hate to get all that aerosol and prophy paste all over my face during the procedure. My face shield is a mess when I'm done with my prophys
I would encourage *everyone* to use a face shield. Sprays and ricochets can be unpredictable (especially with a trigger happy assistant). Most of us think of face shields are only for surgery... After some fixed pros or op procedures I'll take off my shield and see the water and tooth dust splatter and think "Wow, that could have been on my face". Of course even with regular operative, the occasional bur catches an amalgam fragment at the right angle and shoots it right out. There's a satisfying 'tink' when it bounces of my shield.
The op-d-op I (one) is suitable for most uses, the II has adjustable arms for head width. THis is my favortie, covers my face fully, allows room for my loupes and covers my forehead as well.
There are also cheap ones with clips to clip on to the arms of your safety glasses, but have no room for flip down loupes, and it doesn't cover your forehead.
The best face shield is the kind that uses clear plastic that comes off the face mask.

100% agreed. I use the op-d-op for debonds in ortho. Plaque, composite dust, and blood flying all over the place. My co-residents are always stealing it to use for labwork. I think it is sold by a hygiene company and they gave me a student discount when I bought it.
The only one I have ever worn is Pro-Tex. I actually liked it. We would order from either Patterson or Schein. It was a lot to get used to at first. Now I wish I had them at the office I work at. I am an extended duty d.a. so I'm not sure how it all works with Loupes and what not.🙂
