Being a dependent on your parents federal tax forms is different than being a dependent for FAFSA right?

Can I be a dependent for my parents and still not have to give their information on my FAFSA?

I ask because I think I might have to be their dependent to get in-state residency, but I don't want to put their information on the FAFSA form.

Thanks for any help.

going to grad school, you are considered independent and don't need ur parent's info... i think there's only one loan program (health profession's loan or something) where they ask for your paren'ts info. They only use your parent's info. for this loan and don't look at it when trying to award you others..they need ur paren'ts tax return for this one only....at least that's what they said at some financial aid presentations...if you don't want to be considered for this particular loan, they don't need ur parent's information at all

can anyone elaborate on this...

That sounds nearly identical to what I heard at most financial aid presentations

Thanks for the help.... I guess my mind tended to wander during those Financial Aid presentations. Now I wish I could go back to them and ask a lot more questions. I guess the whole money thing comes alive once you stop worrying about getting in.

So it sounds like Im safe to be claimed as a dependent and still not have to give my parents info on FAFSA. Thanks.

You can go back to them and ask alot more questions. Their job is financial aid (including for incoming students). Most of my fin-aid presenters gave us contact info for their office if we had questions about anything. As we get closer to enrolling I'm sure I'll be calling them more.

Some things should be addressed long before starting school- checking credit reports and filling out the FAFSA(right after Jan 1st?)

My girlfriend, who's in med school right now, told me that you're not eligible for merits or scholarships until you submit your parents' tax return info. Other than that, I think you'll be good to go without your parents' info. I'm going to harass my parents to send in their tax returns early.

but some ppl already got scholarships w/ their acceptance letters... i don't remember them saying this at any schools...they were pretty adamant about the health profession's loan as the only program where they need ur parent's info

I'm really not so sure myself. This is just what my girlfriend told me.

I am wondering about that Health Profession Loan, too. Do we need to agree to work at underserved area for a certain # of years in order to get this loan? Or is it just like any other loan? Anyone knows?

Thanks everyone!

i don't think so.... based on what i remember, they said it was a great loan w/ a fixed 5% interest or something (i think interest starts after graduation and not from day one) and they need ur paren'ts tax return for the year. the amount you get is based on ur parent's income strictly

can anyone who has received this loan tell us about it?

I am 32 I am married and have 2 kids. Do you think I will need my parents tax info? What do I do if one of my parents refuse to do so? My parents have been divorced since 1995. I know my mother will refuse. Any thoughts?

i would definately be shocked if you would have to! Maybe this part of the paren'ts tax return is for us who have been/are dependents and the only way we are now not classified as dependents is b/c of grad school...but honestly, i have no clue

having a kid or being married makes you an independent...
