Hey guys, I am applying to medical school this fall and had an embarrassing question to ask y'all. So from 2013-2015, I worked as a feature dancer(or stripper if you prefer) at a local venue. I knew I was applying to medical school, and knew(or thought) that the financial aid would ask for employment verification for the 2016 tax year. So I quit in december 2015. However, upon reviewing the latest FAFSA requirement, it shows that I have to report the 2015 year, and not the 2016 year as I initially planned. So my question is would schools ever see what job/employer I had for the 2015 year, assuming I don't apply for institutional aid(but still apply for FAFSA)? Thanks.

There's no "employment verification" on the FAFSA -- all it wants is your adjusted gross income for the year. Plus, if you're sending a FAFSA to a school it's because you've been accepted, so I can't see how this could be an issue.

FAFSA wants tax numbers, not details. Even if you are picked for verification, you send a copy of your 1099s and W-2s. No FA clerk is going to run to the Dean and get your acceptance rescinded.

Thanks for the info! To clarify my first message, I am not planning on putting the employment on my AMCAS. However, I am afraid when they start to ask for my 1099's they will be able to put two and two together and may "reevaluate" my admittance. As I continue to look into it, I discovered the IRS retrieval tool. If I use this service, then I wouldn't have to hand over the w2/1099 to the school to verify, correct? I will probably just do that.

My undergrad still had to physically verify my family's tax returns one year, but it was so random. Don't worry. For all they know your job was washing dishes or maintenance.

You really have nothing to be worried about. If they even see the name of where you worked, no one will care enough to look it up. If they do look it up, you can simply say you bussed tables or washed dishes. I would be shocked if a school revoked or "re-evaluated" your acceptance because of previous employment. The one thing you should be careful of is pictures - make sure the place doesn't have a website that says your name or has any photos of you. That is something that could potentially harm your application if an adcom or interviewer decides to google your name.

Good luck with your cycle! 🙂

:/ Other than the obvious lie by omission, I don't want to outright lie to them if they ask my employment at "Dark Sensations". As I read more about the irs retrieval, it seems that there is a little to no chance of verification ( opposed to 33% traditionally).

Okay, thank you for the advice and well wishes, hopefully I'm as lucky as you were! Yea my legal name is nowhere near that sort of employment except for taxes.

Alright, I guess I'm going to go ahead and submit, just didn't want to waste a large sum of money on something that was a pipe dream from the get go. Thanks to everyone for the advice! 🙂
