FAFSA question

It's different for med schools. Even if you're "independent" most of them want your parents' info and are going to look at their income if you're under 30 (age differs at some schools). If you're married they look at your spouse's income instead of your parents.

But generally you are independent if you are applying to graduate programs or are over 24. I think there are more ways but I am not sure off the top of my head.

I think it asks you at the beginning of the form if you're a grad student or health professions student, and once you answer yes, you're no longer required to fill in parental info. You have the option of doing so, and many schools do require this for need-based aid determinations.

You are considered independent no matter what because you are going to enter into a professional school. However, some schools still require you to put parental information to aid them in determining financial aid for you. Other schools say it's optional but may be necessary to qualify for institutional aid. You have to contact your school to get their policy on it.

This question has been asked several times. Look in the financial aid forum as there is more information there.
