Hey all,

Just had a quick question about FAFSA. If I'm waiting to hear back from a school post-interview, should I include them in the FAFSA?

Or should I wait until I receive an acceptance (hopefully)? If I choose to do that, it would be past their priority deadline.

Thanks.

No just send it. It's free and most schools specifically say that you can do this somewhere on their website.

Yes yes yes. Send it all at once and save yourself a headache.

Thanks for the answers guys. I had another random question pop up.

If I don't know what my housing situation will be as of this moment (it's either on campus or off campus), what should I put down? I don't want to say on campus but then I end up living off campus and seem like a liar. Sorry for the neuroticism but it's buggin me lol.

Pick the more expensive housing option if you ask me. The reason is that fafsa is used to determine your available loans from the fed government. if you request a lot you can always refuse some of the loans offered.

Gotcha, thanks.

If I can bother you for just one more question if you'll be so kind, I'm a little thrown off by the household size question. I'm currently living with my family but FAFSA classified me as an "independent student." Should I only put down "1" as the household size then? But then it asks if anyone from your household will be attending college and I have a younger brother who is. So I don't know if I should put my actual household size and then "1" for other people attending college.

Yes, include all the schools. And do it quickly. FAFSA priority deadline is tomorrow (3/2).

So let's be clear. I am not a tax attorney or accountant. This does not represent professional advice whatsoever. If you have difficulty filling out your FAFSA, I recommend you consult a professional.

My personal understanding of it is that if you an indepedent, then your household refers to your spouse and anyone you support. Your brother, if not independent, would belong to your parents' household (if they are supporting him).

+1
This is my understanding as well.

Then we are of one understanding. Let us celebrate my brother by toking on the ceremonial pipe.

Yeah most of the schools I interviewed at said to do it as soon as possible. If you don't get in, they'll probably just never download your information from FAFSA.

Also, when I filled out the FAFSA, it said that I can skip inputting the student's (my) assets due to my answers to previous questions. Should I input my assets or does it not matter? Do med schools use student's assets for their own aid?

My personal view is that you ought to do what FAFSA says to do.

FAFSA is the deepest secret nobody knows. FAFSA is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life, which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide. And this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart.

Some med students saved money prior to medical school. They may have assets that allow them to fund medical school without taking loans. That leaves more loans for the people who cannot afford medical school otherwise.

What is FAFSA priority deadline? If I fill it out tomorrow evening, do you think I'm still good?

I don't really understand what the FAFSA priority deadline is considering my school doesn't require submitting FA information, including FAFSA, until April 15.

Isn't the deadline today? That's what it says for my school (MARCH 1) in bold letters and all lol.

Considering many people haven't even been accepted yet I don't think it's a hard deadline.

I think it means that for that school, you will get your financial aid award on the first day that they hand out financial aid offers, so you are guaranteed any need-based institutional aid that they might offer as it's first come first serve. It seems kind of unfair because med school is rolling admissions.

But you fill out your FAFSA any time between Jan and Feb 28 anyway. Just add all the schools you applied to, it doesn't cost you anything.
