When you file your FAFSA for this school year, does everyone receive some federal student aid, or is it restricted just to those who need it. How are most people financing their medical school education

It depends on your school. As a graduate student, you pretty much qualify for the Federal Stafford loans automatically unless you're independently wealthy. So that's 30k unsubsidized (accrues intrest during med school) and 8k unsubsidized (government pays the interest during school). Making up the difference is up to the school. Most private schools will then allow you to access their need based funding (Federal Perkins and Institutional funding) based upon where your parents income falls in comparison to the rest of the class because the "need based" definition is determined by family income, and not your actual need. For those of us who have to go at it without family support, the rest is made up of private loans arranged through your school's financial aid office and their lender of choice.

Hope that helped!
