I'm a 3rd year DO student and am curious how a failing grade in a one test, one unit class, at the end of my 2nd year will be viewed by PDs next year when it comes time to match.
Class rank: ~50%
Step1: 240
EMClub officer
Summer research, no publication.
3rd year grades:
Family Practice: Honors
IM1: High Pass
Surgery: Pass

Will take step 2 prior to applying, and hopefully do well.

I am planning on applying to a lot (70+) of programs, and attending as many interviews as possible (~15-20). I don't care much about location, only quality of training.

Am I crazy to try for the MD match? Or will this one isolated hiccup be viewed within context?

Your thoughts and insights are appreciated.

I think that will have little overall effect. You step 1 score is awesome, and if you can get an equivlant Step 2 score, I think you will have little issue in the MD match.

Applying broadly AND applying early will be important...

I assume this was some 'stupid' class such as stats or early clinical experience etc (stupid used loosely..it probably was not a core med school class).... I think it will greatly be overlooked and possibly not even noticed by some folks. You might be prepared to have some reason why you failed it on interview day...

You'll be fine.

Just don't flunk step 2 or say, for instance... let a crazy girlfriend fling herself over your car hood at night after a bad fight the week of your exam trying to keep you from driving off, locking herself out of her appt building....in the snow....barefooted, forcing you to bundle her up, put your shoes on her, take her back to your place and then try to ignore her so you can do some more qbank questions....then take her back home in the a.m. when the door is open. Mildly distracting. Not that anything like that ever happened to me.

P.S. I still did well on step 2. Also, beware dating someone 11 years younger than you.

Nothing like a little over the top soon to be ex GF problems to complicate one's life.

Wait a minute. You failed a class and are still 50th percentile at your school?

Seems possible, especially if it was one of those "add-on" 1 credit classes. With a USMLE score like that, I expect he did pretty well in the more weighty stuff..

Sort of an awesome post... sorry that happened to you dude....geeez.....
