Hey guys,

Im an M1 at a DO school. They have mandatory wellness sessions on zoom that are worth 1 credit total each semester. In Fall semester I attended a session under a different zoom account. The course director emailed me and accused me of skipping. I presented them with all of my email addresses that could be associated with the account, but they never got back to me. I noticed today that there is an F for that course in my degree page. I'm going to try and dispute this, but I don't think that I will succeed.

Will this affect my chances of matching into residency down the line? I'm interested in IM and pysch, and I would like to do residency in a coastal city if possible.

Thank you for your time.

Edit: I am grateful for all the advice and support that I've received here. I will fight like hell against this P.O.S. administrator and post an update after I reach a conclusion. Wish me luck!

Edit: It didn't work out. I now have a single remediated pass on my transcript... for a wellness course

Calm down. Did you attend or not? Be honest.

If you attended, there’s nothing to worry about. Grades can always be contested and changed. If the course director is ignoring the email, take it to the undergrad med ed dean.

Yep I attended, but I'm not sure what email the zoom account had. I believe it was a recorded session so my face should show up in the recording. I'll take your advice and take it to the med ed dean.

On another note, would an F in this course be a red flag on my residency application?

If you truly attended there's no need to entertain the part I crossed out and you're getting way too ahead of yourself listing what you're interesting and the thread is at risk for getting derailed into a WAMC for Psychiatry/IM thread.

Email that dean because I'm assuming it's summer break now. Make it clear you attended. Mention the course directors actions (not replying to your email and failing you). Say that you're not sure what he/she feels about the situation, but that you are extremely frustrated by the circumstance and will go to any means necessary to contest the F on your transcript. I think that's an understandable reaction

Some ideas:

1.) Did anyone see you on the Zoom call?
2.) I don't care to learn more about Zoom, but I would be surprised if IT could not find a way of confirming a footprint. I think you did the right thing but submitting all your emails. Also login to all those emails and figure out what the name you chose was because for my spam accounts I put a filler name in.

I know this is incredibly frustrating given that you're likely on break looking at a F on your transcript without other classes to worry about, but you are an M1 and the school has a little over 2 years to get the grade fixed before your transcript gets sent out. Focus on your summer break plans.

These schools and admins... i swear they only exist to exploit and torment med students as much as possible while throwing them under the crushing weight of hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt

Failing a wellness course... these admins i can't

And apparently we're dealing with another school with trash IT who can't determine OP logged into zoom wellness lectures even from different accounts

Seems to me from basic honor code, all that would be required to prove presence is a signed affidavit that you were present, if presence is all that necessary for the completion of the course. Frame your presence as an undeniable fact. Send it or submit it formally to the course director alone. Include a letter to the course director addressing the course director’s decision to grade you an F as clerical error and not error in fact. E.g., “As I met course requirements, receiving an F could only be due to a clerical error in data entry.” Do not reference any previous conversations. If there is no response (or unfavorable response) in ten days, forward the affidavit and letter to the dean with a brief introduction and an appeal for the dean to address and solve the issue with the grade. If no faculty will assist you, then appeal to your Student Senate for assistance. Make sure to keep it about clerical error on the letter grade and not error on the fact of your presence or absence at the course. Don’t give up! Best wishes!

Not in my book, if I saw a student failed wellness than I know he’s ready for the real grind.

But I would talk with your dean of students sooner rather than later If the course director is not responding. Be nice, but make sure your firm that you did go.

She is the med ed dean 😢

“I know you don’t even have time to go for a jog but you better make time for this mandatory wellness course”

Wait what? Did we find a school as garbage as Dartmouth?

I'm stunned the IT guys are a lot dumber than i thought. This is something that's easily verified and the school just screwed you over

For what its worth, at my school, all your preclinical years are one paragraph on the MSPE. I am sure PDs will be looking at your boards and clerkship grades over this garbage.

Its just amazing how schools are willing to sabotage their own students to make a point.

Honestly, if I saw this on the admissions committee I would love to poke fun of you about this, and assume you are a baller who has no time for wellness. I think you can play it to your favor with humor, then actually tell the real story. "Yeah, I'm super malignant, I study all the time and don't care of myself"

thank you. I needed to hear that.

This is an excellent approach, and that makes me really happy

All this sounds a little fishy. I don't think the school's actions are premeditated. It almost sounds like a lack of communication rather than malignant intent. OP should press on up the ladder with documentation that this was an error. Possibly all the way to the student promotion comittee. It should be easily resolved.

Agreed this is the right approach, but schools having crappy IT who can't do basic things right has become a disturbing widespread problem as seen with Dartmouth scandal and now here.

Yes, it seems to be more common than you would think. I'm surprised more schools aren't the victim of ransomware.
