To my unpleasant surprise, one of my professors failed me in one of my second semester junior year courses.

Has anyone else been in the same situation and got an acceptance? Any tips on how to handle this? I attend a school comparable to Harvard, but I was able to maintain only an above average GPA (3.1). I'm planning to take the August MCAT. I'm hoping the schools are convinced by my solid recs, great ec list, and a big rebound next semester. Any other advice?

Thanks

professors just don't fail people for no reason. what happened? this might be a red flag for some adcoms, unless you can justify the situation.

comparable to harvard as in the high rate of grade inflation? 😕 prestige?

what school do you attend?

pssst... Yale.

the professor failed you? Sounds like someone needs to grow up.

In an interview:

Interviewer: "I see an F on your transcript. Any explanation?"

theduke: "The professor failed me."

Interviewer: "Ah, so it wasn't your fault the professor jsut decided to fail you?"

theduke: "yup"

Is the grade inflation as bad in Duke?
Maybe 3.1 really is above avg.

Anyone who talks about grade inflation there has probably never taken a science class at Harvard (hint: curve)

And you're probably going into medicine to help people, right? Not for the money...

and yet harvard is still known to have a high rate of grade inflation

Unfortunately I also EARNED some low grades. I think (and hope) the key is to point out what my own shortcomings were that led to the poor grades and how I overcome them to achieve academic success in subsequent semesters.

No, no, I actually think it's Yale. I believe he edited his post soon after I initially viewed it.

ok. . i went to yale too. and i did really crappy in some courses. but for a prof there to fail you?? i feel like if you are really struggling, they will at least give a D or C minus generally, if you show any evidence of caring about the class at all. i had 2 classes where i got very poor grades. what were the circumstances? anything unusual/extenuating? talk to your dean and see if there is ANY way you can get it erased from your transcript. if that fails, ROCK your MCAT. it is the great equalizer. try to get like a 40, i'm not kidding. that should do it 🙂

doesn't visiting the professors at office hours usually help out your grade in that class?

yes!!! it's called taking an active interest in your studies.

depends upons what you are willing to do for him/her.

well i mean like asking him or her for help on a certain topic if you are preforming poorly in the class. If you are preforming well well alittle kiss a$$ doesn't hurt now does it?

I failed a course my sophomore year...I take responsibility for it, but I have some fear that I am doomed. I wrote about it a little in my personal statement and I am hoping to get the chance to explain it in an interview. I have worked really hard to make myself stand out in other ways...

Also, on advice from friends who are already admitted and people in the admissions office, I applied early admission, which gives me a better chance at interview and admission. :scared:
