I failed General Chemistry 1 for the third time, I just saw my final grade for my 3rd attempt. I would like to know what are my chances getting into a DO school. I will attempt it a fourth time, I just need to see where I went wrong and what I have to change in order to be successful this time. My family problems seem to be a factor as our financial troubles are very stressful but, that shouldn't be an excuse for failing.

If you can't pass Gen Chem 1 after three attempts...you should consider other career options

Is it the way the material is being presented and tested on? I've seen others (including myself) have issues with different Profs covering/focusing on different material for the same Chem class. Case in point, I took Gen Chem I last fall, but withdrew towards the end for family issues, took it again this semester with a different Prof and certain topics were left out (i.e. Molarity) while new stuff was added like Thermochemistry.

Hi , I'm really sorry I had a friend with your situation and I know how stressful it is..
What my friend did she didn't retook general chem for a while ( she actually failed twice) and retook it to a different college after 1 yr ,she did great and during that 1 yr she took other science courses like general bio ,nutrition .. My suggestion Take some time off or change ur major like psychology then after u graduate do a post bacc + high mcat and you should be fine :)

Yep, been there. You are trying too hard. Take a break from it all. Get your family and personal life in order before attempting again.

Well family problems are a factor and you would be surprised that it can play a factor in your grade. My dad was in a coma for a few years and passed away when I was an undergrad. I passed my courses and but did not excel in them. I graduated but with a bad GPA (3.0 or so). Later I had migraines and stomach pains. My doctor said I had a low serotonin problem and may have been probably due to the stress of my family problems. I took zoloft for the serotonin problem and started living more healthy. Then my grades shot up like a rocket. I did a graduate M.S. and had a 3.8 GPA. Right now I am a post-bacc student and am still trying to get my grades up (praying for a 4.0 this semester).

Main thing is get your problems sorted out and decide whether you want to try again. There have been people in the past who have failed courses multiple times and still have went to medical school. It is all the mater of how bad you want it and what you are willing to do to help yourself.

If you want to still continue, then I suggest this. Drop your credit load (if at 12 credits then do 9 credits) and start speaking to someone at the college about how to study better and live a balanced life. There are free resources at college if you look for them. Try to maybe see a learning specialist and figure out if study habits and learn style is a problem. You should also try to see your professor or tutors if you don't understand something. Be active about helping yourself.

Only you can be realistic in your self evaluation. I've known people (myself included) that have had some serious family and personal problems that got in the way and eventually were able to turn things around. On the other hand, I know people that simply use it as a scapegoat. "I would have done well if only [X] hadn't happened/was going on." You need to be realistic about that especially since you've failed the course three times. If you conclude your personal problems were really the issue, the best thing you can do is take a breather from your schooling. I know life feels like time is ticking away, but it's worse to invest it poorly. Definitely look into alternative career options too. It sounds harsh, but you don't want to be left without a plan B.

By how much did you fail? Did you get a C-? or did you get an F? What did you struggle with? I mean did you not

First of all, do not retake gen chem 1 until everything that might have distracted you is cleared up. Secondly you're going to need to sincerely try to look at how you've managed to fail a course three times that in majority tests your ability in simple algebra. Thirdly ( Neglect this part if you're not working 50hours a week, and cannot study even 1 minute, or have a learning disability) and I don't like telling people this, and I've known people who have had similar experiences especially in classes like intro bio, college algebra, chem 1, it's simply time to really consider an alternative career/major. It's just the fact of life, not everyone is cut out for science and not everyone has the capacity to work with it. Find an area of study that you're strong in and get into that.

Well what are the key things that you need help with?
Unit conversions?
the mole?
stoichiometry?
% yield? What's the main problem??

Good advice except for the last part,

Anyone, and I mean anyone can and will get into a medical school in the united states if they sacrifice everything for it. That means no going on SDN when you should be studying, that means no watching youtube videos when you should be doing your prelab, that means no more TV no more parties. If you want something bad enough-that you put everything else aside, and focus on just getting into medical school- then you will get into medical school.

It doesnt matter if you are naturally gifted in science or not. As long as there is nothing wrong mentally with a person, then their brain will adapt. It will get better at recognizing chemical reactions, it will pick out key sections in verbal reasoning, it will add and subtract, etc.

How bad do you want this? Are you willing to put everything else on hold; relationships, financial security, fun, social interaction- to get into a school? If you truly can not see yourself doing anything else, get up, get to work, and make no more excuses.

Go see the professor every single day. No excuses.

And listen to this EVERY SINGLE DAY. I am chasing my dream, and I will become a physician. Stop talking about wanting to be a doctor, and just DO IT!

If you can, definitely stay away from this class until you can handle it without family/personal distractions. You need a break from it. Try to get a tutor or take advantage of your schools free tutoring services. If u can study it during winter /summer break you can go on your own pace writing out any questions you have along the way. Create your own outlines in simplest terms so you can understand it later when you take the class again.
Good luck!
