Failing a rotation :(

I wanted to post a following thread, does anybody have any experience with applying to residencies after having failed a rotation (in my case it is surgery ).. are the chances of getting in pretty slim or do I still stand a chance?? Thanks for your replies!!

I doubt that your med school will let you graduate without doing some sort of remediation. There was a guy in our class that failed a rotation (everyone somehow found out about it) and repeated it, passed, and matched into radiology - I think it was either family med or peds or something - not directly related to his field so it was okay.

Sure, I'll have to remediate, hopefully I'll do fine the second time through.. the problem though is that the "F" will stay in my transcript and the evaluations from that rotation will likely find their way into the Dean's letter.. It kind of appears bad whichever way I look at it.. Also, the rotation is "surgery" one of the more important ones for EM..

Most Dean's letters that I know of only highlight the positive - I doubt that they'll copy any text from your evaluation for a rotation that you failed. Your dean might ask you for some sort of explanation that they can include but a negative eval won't actually make it into the text.

Surgery is important... but you can still make up for it in a couple of ways: 1) kick the crap out of your EM rotations(s) and 2) possibly do a surgery sub-i (painful), shine, and show them that your third year grade was a fluke
