Hey all, this is my first post, and I've already learned a lot just lurking and reading the threads, so a big thanks to the members here!
Anyway, I'm pretty far along in the application process for four DPT programs, and my stats are pretty good for the most part. I am taking the GRE this weekend, so I don't have a score for that yet (I'm scoring in the 1200 range on practice exams, though) but my GPA is 3.31 and my pre-req GPA (varies depending on the program and their pre-reqs) is 3.84. Unfortunately, my last year in undergrad was really bad. The first three years I got all As and Bs (with the exception of a couple Cs in business courses which is my minor). My last year, I got a C in OChem1, a C in Bio1, D in ethics, and failed OChem2 (tried to drop it, but was forced to take the failing grade). I'm retaking Bio and ethics, which will boost both GPAs, and then I have A&P to take which I'm expecting to do well in. I'm forecasting a final GPA of 3.5 and pre-req GPA of 3.8.
What worries me is that I failed OChem2 even though none of the programs I'm applying to require it, although Northwestern recommends OChem (not sure if it's just one semester or not). I had some considerable extenuating circumstances that last year (death in my family, another family member taking ill, and a very rocky breakup). Not trying to make excuses, but I imagine it's better to have SOME kind of reason rather than just senior apathy or something.
I have about 50 hours of volunteer shadowing between LTC and Sports Med (which is my primary interest). Has anyone else been in a similar position (good stats, but one black mark on your record) and if so, were you successful in getting into the program you wanted to get into?
Thanks a lot in advance, guys. Maybe I shouldn't be, but I'm really freaking out that that failing grade is gonna haunt me.
