Can anyone share there experience with the FAP program for any of the branches? I'm a student in a Caribbean Medical School who is planning to do a surgery residency, then onto trauma, but was also thinking about enrolling in the FAP program to help pay back some of the debt/serve my country. I have not be able to find too many current thoughts on the program with its pros and cons so if anyone is currently in enrolled in the program and would like to shed light on it that would be great.

Pun intended i'm sure.

Speaking from the Navy side, I am not sure how warm a reception a FMG would have for FAP at this time. At a minimum, you would need an unrestricted license to be eligible.

I'm on FAP, half way through resideny, so little exposure to the military part yet.

But from what I remember, they only take US medical school graduates. Now if you do residency in the US, then you can do direct accession and join that way I think.

Either way, I'd talk to a recruiter as soon as possible if you interested, as one, I might be wrong, and two, I literally started on initial paperwork in january to get accepted a few weeks before residency started in june (months of paperwork and jumping through hoops).

From what i've read, I can join no problem once I have obtained a Civilian Residency and i'm assuming by that point i'll have my medical license.

What made you decide to sign for the FAP program and what branch?

Depending on the state you may actually have to complete three years of residency before you are licensed, because you are an IMG. You will not have an unrestricted medical license the day you start residency at the very least, you have to complete at least 1 year of internship and take step 3.

Remember you are basically attending a diploma mill in terms of accreditation.
