FAQ: What are my chances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any chance at all? I know I am not a competitive candidate for radiology.
Step 1: 249
Step 2 CK: 234, CS Pass
Step 3: 219
Internal medicine, Ob/gyn, family medicine: HP
Surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry: P
I am a PGY-2 in anesthesiology, interested in switching to radiology and have decent letters and in training scores (if this matters at all).

How many schools should I apply to? Where can I expect to match? Can I do anything to improve my application?
Would taking a year of to do more research (with a possible pub) help improve my shot at a Cali school?

Top 10- 20 medical school
No AOA, I''m around the 50th percentile

Preclinical grades: Mix of H and HP.

Clinical grades: Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine: Pass
Radiology and Neuro: High Pass
Surgery, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, OBGYN, Family Medicine: All Honors

Research: 1 poster publication in basic science research, 1 pub from undergrad.

Volunteer: Reasonable amount of community service. No leadership activities.

Step 1 : 240
Step 2: Haven't taken yet, hoping to have a 250 ish.

I am deciding between IM and radiology. I enjoy Radiology much more then IM and think that I have a reasonable chance of matching, but am worried that if I don't match in a good enough program that I may not be able to find employment in a couple of years.

Thank you in advice for any advice.

Bump :naughty:

Hey all,

Wondering what my chances are at a CA residency (or at least west coast), as I'm from there. Currently at a mid-tier midwest school and don't have very good clinical grades.
Step1: 250
M3 year grades: P in peds, HP everything else so far, no Honors...too quiet(?)
Have a few research experiences, but no pubs, aside from a poster at school.

I feel like the only thing competitive about me would be my step score, which probably can't make up for all my other mediocre areas. I'm going to try to keep on improving clinical rotations-wise, but not sure how much of a difference that will make at this point. If anyone has any advice on how I could improve my chances, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you 🙂

Hey everyone. I'm a very recent convert to radiology (<2 months ago). I was dead-set on doing orthopedic surgery and even did a year off of research in orthopedics (between MS3-4). I quickly realized it wasn't for me. It just so happened that one of my projects worked with 3-D modeling of patient CT scans which peaked my interest in Rads. Was hoping for an honest evaluation of my statistics.

Finishing up my orthopedic research year and entering MS-4 in 1 month.
Top 50 school (I think 30-40)
Step 1: 245
Step 2: taking June (given my shelf scores, I do anticipate doing well on the exam)
AOA not offered until after Match Day

(Only H/P/F)

Medicine: H
Surgery: P
Peds: H
FM: P
ObGyn: H
Psych: P
Longitudinal: H

Ortho elective: H
Rads elective: taking next month

Publications: (all ortho related) 2 abstracts, 1 book chapter (2-3 pubs in the works)

Recs: 1 ortho, 1 ortho (research), 1 medicine, ? (I have to connect with my home rads PD and discuss getting a rec)

I would like to go to a NYC residency (I was born there and have family near the area). My goals right now are Cornell and NYU (I plan on doing away rotations at both institutions). I am actually interested in MSK research and hospital for joint disease (NYU) and HSS (cornell) are two of the finest orthopedic institutions in the nation.

What are my chances and how can I improve upon them? I am working on connecting with my home PD so I can get a rec, but clearly it won't be as strong as someone who has been interested in Rads since Day 1.

Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated! Again, I am VERY new to rads and despite doing my homework, I am still filled with questions. It's amazing how different the process is from orthopedic residency... but I digress...

Not much chance for NYU or Cornell for residency, but go to a slightly lower tier NYC program and you should be able to get an MSK fellowship at one of those programs easily (assuming you work hard, get decent MSK recs, etc etc).

NYU/Cornell are long shots, Sinai/Einstein/Columbia are more likely, and the other academic programs/good community programs are well within reach.

250 is not enough to make up for no honors in CA. Probably even below average at many of the academic CA programs.

Apply broadly, but don't get hopes too high.

Have backups out of state.

Hi folks.

Thinking about applying to rads next year concerned about clinical grades and whether I should reconsider applying. Would like academic or community program with academic affiliation but okay with just community programs also.

Geographic preference: Northeast/mid-Atlantic/south east/mid-west

Med school: Allopathic school in Northeast (in the top 30 or 40 US med schools)
Step 1: 240
3rd year clerkships - All passes :scared: (too quite)
Basic clinical sciences - Mostly B's
AOA - no
ECs - the usual
Research:
A) one non rads second author paper
B) abstract submitted to RSNA
C) Working on two radiology papers for possible second or third authorship.

I'd appreciate your input!

If it stays non-competitive, you'll match easily, maybe not academic.

Apply to all academic programs you'd consider in those areas (always possible they'd like your app/research) + local community programs, maybe a few extra in Southeast or Midwest as safeties.

Hello! Just seeing what are my chances..i want to match into an academic institution, I'm really interested in denver .. i'm not trying to go to west/east coast ..

I go to an academic medical school in texas
Step 1: 242
Step 2: not taken
Preclinical: Mainly honors, a few HP
Clinical: HP- IM, P- the rest, Surgery- currently in (this is what i'm most worried about)
research: poster and presentation, pending publication, another publication from undergrad

please let me know!

You both will match somewhere if you apply broadly.

Chances?
Top 10 med school

Step 1 : 253
Step 2 : 248

Honors: surg, peds, EM, Neuro
High pass: medicine, family med, obgyn, psych

5+pubs rads/non rads

Thanks!!

You'll match to a good academic program easily. My guess would be somewhere in the top 25 or so programs. I don't think theres any need to apply to community programs with an app like this assuming your letters are good.

I'd apply to academic progams and good community programs for a mix of about 50 apps. Your step is fine but not good enough to set you apart by any means. Your clinical grades are where you'll get hurt at most good academic programs, imo.

Okay so here's what I've got...

DO School
Step 1: 233
Step 2: Still haven't taken but what should my goal be?
No research
Mostly HPs for my clinical rotations

What do you guys think?

Ok here I go..

Step 1 255
Grade mostly As first 2 years.
Just about all HP 3rd year (except Honors in Rad)
No research

Really worried about not having honors and research? Will I match anywhere?

Appreciate the help

Hey y'all asking about your chances:

Remember to let us know what your target programs are (region, specific schools, etc). There are many radiology residency positions (over 1000) across the US that vary greatly in competitiveness, and if you don't give us a target, then all I can really say is, barring red flags such as a failed Step 1, you'll have a decent-to-great chance of matching into the field. Radiology is traditionally a competitive field, but there are enough less-competitive programs that most applicants can get in if they are not picky about where.

DO School

Apply broadly; your chances will be best at smaller academic and community programs in less popular locations. Odds of getting in somewhere in radiology are moderate, but with a below average Step 1, no research, no honors, and a DO degree, you'll be at a significant disadvantage compared to other applicants. It really depends on what programs/geographical region you are targeting. However, recognize that there is still a real chance that you may not match if you do not play your cards correctly.

Step 2 goal: As high as possible. >240 sounds good. I assume you'll be participating in the 2014 Match, in which case there really isn't enough time to do meaningful research. However, if you get started now, then perhaps you'll come up with a good addition to your story of "why radiology" come interview time. Also, kick-ass LORs goes without saying.

You'll match. Top tier programs will be reaches and are frankly doubtful (though LORs are always a wildcard), but with your step 1 score you'll have a good chance of matching into mid-tier programs, even despite your clinical grades (as long as your evals are still good).

Go to a top 3 med school, my step scores concern me

Step 1: 245
Step 2CK 256
prelicnical (P/F) Pass
Honors: All else
HP: IM Surg Neuro
2 Pubs, top research lab, poster at international conference

Want to try for East Coast academic

Step 1 is borderline low for top-tier academic programs, but your school name may push you past the threshold for receiving interviews from some of them. There's a wide range of academic programs in terms of competitiveness ranging from the top to ones that regularly fill through the scramble/SOAP. Depends on whether you're only aiming for the top ones.

Quick check-in from someone who fell in love with radiology after being gung-ho ortho until my radiology rotation at the end of third year.

Step 1: 262
Top 5 school
Preclinical P/F but got a scholarship for strong preclinical performance
Clinical: Honors in all except Neuro, which was HP
Decent ECs (got 3 student organized medical language classes recognized as official courses)
Ortho/Rads research; 1 pub in submission

Looking at top academic programs like MGH/MIR/UCSF/etc

You guys are the best!

Any advice or input appreciated!!

step 1: 232
pre-clinical: all honors/hp
clinical: honors in Rads, Hp in peds, OB/gyn, anesthesia, FM, Pass in psych/neuro, surg,y grades are ok, but I have amazing evals on just about every rotation.
school: Midwest, I'm from the northeast (born and raised)
Research: 10+ Manuscripts published (1 first author, 3 second author, others vary in authorship), 10+ abstracts published, tons of posters and presentations at national meetings, with multiple awards. I have worked on multiple textbook chapters, 1 textbook very extensively, with multiple chapter authorships. I'm an editor for a journal.

EC: A lot, involved around school, in various organizations and class counsel.

Goal: Match at an acedemic north east program, preferably with a good IR program. Would appreciate any honest advice, what programs I should be aiming for? I know with the spectrum of programs I can match if I apply broad, I just want to know if my goals are achievable and if so where I have a good chance and what I should consider reaches.

On a side note any advice on TY's in the northeast? Is it better to just match prelim at the program your going to be at?

Thanks!!

Has anyone matched rads with a failed CS?
I feel like i failed, will get my score aug 14th. I would potentially be able to retake and get a pass before interviews, but it would unfortunately show a fail on my ERAS...
any comments/experiences greatly appreciated.

you probably didn't fail unless english isn't your first or primary language.

AOA? LoRs? Those two will probably be the biggest unmentioned factors that determine how you fare at the top programs. However, I think you already know that you have a good chance at getting interviews from them anyway.

Can anyone please suggest programs that I should be looking at with a Step 1 <220?

New switch to radiology, what do you think my chances at matching at a decent program that would allow me to do IR:

School: top 15
Step 1: 260
MS 1-3: pass, no honors 🙁 too quiet but good evals (obviously they are not gonna say I suck)
Research done: 2 poster presentations, 1 first author abstract
Research pending (may or may not fall through before ERAS submission): 1 co-author paper, 1 first author paper, 1 first author abstract and poster presentation
All research NON-RADS
AOA: Nope
LOR: 1-2 strong NON-RADS (will definitely try to get some during 4th year sub-Is from rads attendings)
Extracurricular: volunteer, teaching, etc nothing that stands out

Strengths:
School rank and step score, "some" research

Weakness:
no honors, no AOA, no research in RADS, no mentors/LORs from RADS yet

What do you think my chances are at west coast (kinda want to match there for family purposes but main goal is to just match)? What are some good mid-tier programs that have a good shot for IR fellowship? How bout reach top-tier programs?

Thanks in advanced! Looking forward to finishing med school! Whoot whoot!

Only community hospitals unless you're a superstar otherwise. (Or academic programs in undesirable areas, eg Midwest.)

Midwest Program; allopathic; American grad

Step 1: 218
Step 2: haven't taken yet

Honors - Plastic Surgery, Neurology, Internal Medicine
High Pass - Psychiatry, OB/Gyn, Neuroradiology/NIR elective
Pass - everything else;

Couldn't schedule a "Radiology I" elective in time (I switched from wanting to apply to Neurology after my first week in Neurorads), but will be taking Peds Rads/Peds IR at RENOWNED children's hospital soon - hoping for another LOR.

I have really good evaluations from all my attendings on my Dean's Letter from all of my rotations, except general surgery - the chief of surgery just decided he didn't like me from day 1 even though I busted my ass and wrote "Generally works hard and gets along with everyone on the team." Really obviously passionate about radiology, especially IR/NIR.

Research: Working on SWIFT PRIME and a IMS-III review, but no pubs yet; a couple pending projects. 2-3 abstracts in neurology and radiology.

LORs: Strong LORs from a neuroIR attending/department at associated private hospital; Strong medicine LOR; looking to get one from the radiology department.

Extracurriculars: pretty involved in neurology interest group, radiology interest group, ultimate frisbee league, musical endeavors (I would say I'm well-rounded).

And I have a wonderful personality... 😉

Looking to match anywhere in the Midwest; would love to match in FL (USF - Tampa, UF-Jacksonville, or Jackson Memorial - Miami); would love to match one of the very few DIRECT programs as well.

Chances? Advice? Should I even bother applying... I suppose I could take the Neurology (I love Neuro!) route to NIR... but then I wouldn't get to do peripheral interventions 🙁. Trying to stay positive, haha! But definitely stressed!

ill be honest, your step 1 is really quite low..

thank you for the sound advice ar2388... you just opened my eyes

now i see the matrix code everywhere!

226 step 1
Step 2: will take early August, practice test two months ago (before surgery, peds) was 224; goal score is 250 (I did very well on all shelf exams)
Top half of class overall
Honors: Family Med, Neuro (pass on everything else, we don't have "high pass")
Evaluations: all positive, no negative comments
Senior authorship on publication
Rec letters: Peds, Fam Med, Research (no rads letter)

It's still a bit in the air, but if you really have your heart set on NIR, I'm not sure radiology is the way to go.

The neuro - vascular neuro - neuroIR path is probably the most uncertain path but you may have a stronger referral base and it seems like many more people are doing this.

Radiology trained people seem to be becoming less common in endovascular neurosurgery relative to neurosurgeons and neurologists.

If you're really all about neuro, I would think seriously about the neuro path instead. With your step and surgery grades unlikely to get neurosurgery, but that would be good to look into as well.

I will be applying for radiology this year. I want to match into a good academic program (preferably on the west coast). I want to know what are my chances at landing a top-tier program and what can I do to enhance my application?

I plan to get 2 LOR from my radiology rotation (currently in). 1 from my family medicine preceptor who I have worked with for 3 years, and 1 from an IM attending.

Step1: 248
Class Rank: top 25%
School: mid-tier midwest US MD program
M3: OB honors, FM honors neuro honors, psych honors, rads honors, surgery honors, peds high pass, IM high pass
AOA: maybe
Research: minimal. summer research between M1-M2 (clinical surgery research, presentation to the department) and a minor undergrad research project
Extracurriculars: extensive involvement in volunteering, 2 leadership positions, GHHS member

I appreciate your advice, thanks for your time.

Could you help me decide on how many programs to apply to.

International Grad(Graduated in 2013)
Step 1: mid 260s
Step 2: waiting for results, hoping for high 260s
CS: Pass

Pubs: one second author in IM, one first author in non pub med indexed. Three oral presentations,
Working on one radiology project at a university, hoping to send it for publication soon(-third author)

Three letters: One strong rads letter from an asst Professor at the university, One other letter from a Rads professor, One strong letter from an Internal medicine attending.

2 months USCE with 2.5 months research.

Do I stand a chance. How many programs should I apply to and which areas should I apply to more.

Thank you.

I'm in Radiology right now, but a good friend of mine who is currently in his 4th year wants some input into his chances. I told him to make an SDN account but he's too lazy and asked me to find out.

Step 1: 203
Step 2: 213 / PASS
Clerkship Grades: Mainly HP and P, no Honors
Radiology elective: Will start in 1 week
Publications: 2 ongoing projects, hoping to publish at least 1 in time for ERAS (both Radiology related)

I told him the honest truth that his chances are slim given his Board scores. He's working very close with a Rads Attending for his research and doing a good job on showing interest and hard work. He can probably get a great ROL from this Attending. Otherwise, his scores (Boards and clerkship) will be his biggest drawbacks. He's going to apply to a mix of Radiology and Int Med. I told him to apply to every Radiology program out there (obviously not the top 25 in order to save money). What are your thoughts?

My primary question is what are my chances at academic centers in the absence of research? Let's say for a school like UTSW and OHSU or less likely UWash.

Step 1: 271
Step 2: taking soon. Let's say in the same range for the sake of argument. Would a 280 add much if anything?
Preclinicals: all honors
Clinicals: all honors
Junior AOA

No research whatsoever. None likely in the next 4 months.
1 med letter, 1 surg letter, 1 rads letter. No idea of the quality.

Thank you for any feedback.

By ridiculous, they mean that you're stats are so ridiculously good, no research isn't much of a ding for you. I wish that were my only problem when applying.

you'd be super competitive at every program if you made some kind of effort at doing research. Without it, I'd guess you're competitive at non-competitive location elite programs (i.e. WashU, Duke, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo). Just do some project now. It doesn't take much. Just make some kind of effort...

Otherwise, I'm not sure you'll be ranked to match at the UCSF/MGH/BWH/etc although you may still get interviews (depending on the competitiveness of applicants that year).

280 on CK will add absolutely nothing.

Not sure I would put CCF in the same group as the other programs you mentioned. When I interviewed there last year the program seemed mostly DOs and FMGs...

Hey there, I am a Current 4th year in US allopathic mid-tier school but well recognized school

Step 1: 223
step 2: taking soon
Clinical: HP ob/gyn, medicine, psych... passes everything else
DR I am doing in September- will it be too late to get LORs?

Research:
-Co-authored a textbook chapter in a new edition of an major interventional radiology textbook
-- trying to get another Rads proj going
- published abstract in ID
- scholarship for summer research but no pubs

EC: Founded an overseas pro bono surgery mission trip have been there 2x since med school, med school ambassador for HS students interested in med, was scribe for note taking class lectures, some other random things not sure how much this helps anyway

LORs: Hopefully strong from IR Chairman at school who I wrote chapter, 1 peds, 1 IM

Regions/Schools: NE hopefully an academic institution. I know I dont have the luxury to be picky and would not mind staying at my home institute..

Montefiore, St. Lukes, Drexel, Temple, Albert Einstein [philly], Georgetown, GW, Christiana Care, Hershey/Penn state, Geisinger, UF. Will apply to at least 80 programs.

I am probably going to apply medicine for backup but I am wondering how do you go about applying to categorical medicine program and also a prelim and a radiology spot at the same institution... especially at my home institution. Should I tell my medicine prog director that I am also applying rads, doesn't feel like it's a good idea.

Any advice on where to apply, how to increase my chances, and double applying to IM would be appreciated. Thank you and good luck!👍👍👍
