Ok so I have some rotations at the VA and to be honest I have no idea about what happened in WW2 and other wars aside from that we won... So can anyone give me a list of the highest yield facts to know so I won't look like an idiot when a vet is talking about some battle.

Just let them tell their story since what they went through is usually markedly different than the official version

I would NEVER bring up the topic yourself - since you have no idea what they went through & what things mights get triggered if you do

Just lend a sympathetic ear - since many talk about how the gov F'ed them over (and it did) - and tell them you will take care of them

Keep in mind that the nurses @ the VA are some of the laziest, dumbest & most entitled people you will come across & that you will have to hunt them down to even get the simplest of things done (foleys, PVRs, blood draws)

You can look up anything your heart desires on the internet and you want us to sit here and post "high yield facts" about ww2 so you can talk to your patients? Try talking to them like a normal person
I'd be happy if people here (not the OP, but in general) would use the Search function first.

When they're telling their story just listen. And actually listen. Don't just let it run in one ear and out the other. My biggest pet peeve is when in talking about that stuff to someone and I can tell they don't give a ****. I'm like "great, I got shot at for you and you couldn't care less." Makes my blood boil.

So just listen to them and acknowledge that what they went through was difficult

Civil War - We broke up with England and they became this uber jealous/possessive girlfriend who tried to claim everything in our place. We kicked the bitch out and put a restraining order on her.
WW1 - we won, nuff said.
WW2 - we beat the **** out of Nazi's and nuked Japan twice.
Korean War - We beat the **** out of them because of Dr. Manhattan and the Comedian
Gulf War - We beat the **** out of Iraq because they forgot to buy tanks
Operation Iraqi Freedom - TBA

Well... 9/10 for the idea, but 2/10 on the execution. Let's try this again, filling in the other ones.

Revolutionary War - Basically what is above for the Civil War
War of 1812 - The time limit on the restraining order expired, and the crazy ex-girlfriend came back, and lit the capital (our genitals) on fire. That bitch. We slapped her back across the ocean.
Civil War - Either a necessary event that had massive casualties on both sides to free humans from being owned, or those stupid Yankees comin down and takin er jerbs, states rights, whatever (totally not about slavery, obviously), depending on which side of the mason-dixon line you're on.
Vietnam War - First rule - Never talk about the vietnam war.

I think that's the new curriculum for Common Core.

You know what I meant. My brain only thinks step 2 ck atm.

Honestly I don't see anything wrong with that. Girl is seeing history with her own two eyes. This is a good thing.

I don't think it's respectful of the dead to be super excited/happy on a site of mass death. Same would apply to anyplace where lots of death happened.

Granted, she is probably too young/stupid to even know what WWII or the holocaust was, but that's not really an excuse for this type of behavior.

I mean I also don't like the selfie itself, but that's just me being an old man.

I doubt she meant it in a disrespectful way, I just think she's incredibly ignorant. However, the level of somber, pain, suffering and anger associated with the site is too great to treat so trivially. What she did is not okay and very inappropriate. Again, I doubt she meant to be disrespectful, she's probably just ignorant of history.

I was just being sarcastic given the recent media explosion over the Auschwitz selfie.

I've been to Auschwitz, Dachau, and Buchenwald. When I was there I didn't really take any pictures with people in them...just some pictures to better remember the horror of it. It was one of the most somber experiences I've had traveling.

I think it was ignorant of the girl to take, more ignorant to post on social media. But at the same time she's a kid and I think it's disgusting that this thing has been blown into a national controversy and is on every major news network. Thank God I didn't grow up in a world where every dumb thing I did as an adolescent had the potential to go viral...

I can agree with the bolded. That's unfortunately what happens when private things become public because of social media. I wonder how much more info will be shared in the next generation.
