Fasting?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My bff is muslim and he's been diligently studying and taking mcat prac tests while fasting. His dedication is awesome. I'm Jewish and I observed a fast last week that began saturday night at 8:15 and ended sunday night at 9:15 so I know what its like. Personal growth= worth the effort.

Awesome! Hopefully he'll do well!

Do the Jewish people have anything similar that we Muslims could try? I'm always up for experiencing other faiths.

Not a problem! Over the past few years I have made many non-Muslim friends who did not know anything about Muslims until they met me. Usually all it takes is to talk and you will be surprised by what you learn 😉

story of my life! ramadan mubarak all 🙂

This was at my grandmas house yesterday for Iftar...

If your college has an MSA and a JSU you can possibly look at an interfaith exchange. We had it at my school. Jewish students came to the Friday khutbah while Muslims went to the Shabbat Friday night. If that's not possible, just tag along with a bunch of Jewish friends to the Shabbat. It is every Friday evening. Also, if they have a Hillel or something of that sort, you can get lunch/dinner with them too. That is also pretty awesome. You will make friends AND get kosher food 🙂

And omg this looks amazing!!!!!

If you are going to Shabbat - protip: wear something nice! Like buttoned down shirt and dress pants if you are a guy

What are your thoughts on not fasting while studying for mcat that is in a week? Can't focus while I fast so I haven't been.

I think shabbat is a good call. It's not a fast, but it's a celebratory meal. my muslim bff comes to mine and enjoys the food and the company=)

I've fasted for charity, which was a valuable experience, but I see no higher reason to deprive my body of nutrients for extended periods of time. There are more productive ways to test my self-control, and a healthy diet would suffice for the benefits many people seek (though there are benefits to fasting, there are also tons of dubious health claims out there). Do what you wish, but I would advise against it during critical times like classes and studying for the MCAT. Fasting is interesting because it has appeared in so many cultures. Maybe it's a way to "transcend" your biological drives, but this brings me back to one of my original points. There are other ways to pursue self-mastery, which could very well be longer lasting (as we are tied to those drives). I agree with the benefit of fasting to feel how the disenfranchised feel, but doing so without taking further action (e.g., the charity I mentioned before) seems rather pointless to me. Edit: This is a comment on fasting in general.

Ah,Yes. You have a point. But in our religon we have five pillars. Four of them are mandatory(Three for the most part). Fasting is one of them.

Well, Off to Ifar to feast on some food.

You might be able to guess what my religious views are like, but I am familiar with Islam. My family is mostly made up of Jews, Christians, and godless heathens (like me), but I've tried to familiarize myself with all Abrahamic religions. Again, my post was just about fasting in general, but I will add that my views also extend to people doing it for religious reasons.

I'm not fasting because I need to have my full energy and focus to study cuz I need to do well on this MCAT exam. If you have tips or suggestions (comments) please let me know.

Last year, I fasted while studying for the MCAT, but on the day of the test, I didn't fast.

First full fast since converting! 🙂 It's a little sad as I'm studying for the MCAT and don't feel like this Ramadan is as productive as last year's was (when I was in the midst of learning about Islam, learning to pray, preparing for my official shahada, reading through the Qur'an, etc.) Plus, I think the sting of being the only fasting one in my house is hitting me more this year. Alhamdulillah always though, it's been going well and I haven't had any issues in terms of studying.

Masha'Allah congrats on the first fast! Good luck with the MCAT I will make du'aa` for you!

p.s. there's a lot of baraka in studying after fajr especially in Ramadan =]

excellent advice! I should follow it more often. I usually take a quick nap after fajr.... trying to break the habit
