FAU (Florida Atlantic University) and UMiami

Hi!
So i am confused....Is FAU a new medical school that is opening up? Or is it just affiliated with the University of Miami and is just another place that you can decide to complete your schooling if you get into the University of Miami? If not, is it a completely different brand new medical school that opened up this year that you apply to separately? Thanks

FAU at the moment runs a section of UM's med school, but they are breaking off and forming their own med school. Supposedly the 1st class will enter Fall 2011. I have not gotten to the section of AMCAS where I choose schools yet (still entering ECs), but I'd imagine if this is really what is happening then it should be listed as a med school you can send your app to.

Is it on there this year?

It used to be an affiliated medical campus of UMiami, but now they're trying to start up as a separate medical school. Not sure when they'll be accepting their first class though.

FAU has broken ties with UM & have been approved by Florida Legislature for their own Medical School slated to open Fall '11. However, I don't believe they are listed on AMCAS yet, so I'm not too sure how that's going to work.

The program is still waiting for the Governor's signature although it is slated to open in the Fall of next year. And BTW you cannot select it on AMCAS anyway (weird). 😕

The FAU medical school will be opening Fall 2011. They are supposed to be accredited in February sometime, and then you will be able to submit your application. I do research in the college of medicine that currently houses the UM medical students.

Yeah they were just waiting for LCME to put them in phase 3 of accreditation process like the other new schools are in. Supposedly today is when apps come out. I'm going to call them in a couple of hours if I don't see the website change to include stuff.

supposed to be roughly 60-65 students. Its a bit more speedy with FAU because they were established as a med school under the Miami Miller affiliation and accreditation. They split off from them and decided the time was right now to be their own school as it would also help with reduction of cost for students attending there.

So yeah its for class of 2015. i.e. the people who start med school this fall. Like all the other app threads are for.

Let's cross our fingers that the rumors I've been hearing are true. 🙂

Finally called the great one and only Dr. Hinkley today. 😀

He said this week they will probably be getting things finalized in the amcas system. he also said that there will be a proper amcas submission to them and secondary as with normal app cycles. No amcas only or paper app only. same as it will be next year and every year afterwards despite the lateness in the game.

He said to keep an eye on the website over the next 24 hours and few days.

Don't believe me then call him. His number is listed on the med.fau.edu site

Keep ur eyes out over the next couple of weeks, but basically the same way you applied to every single other MD school that was not through the texas application service.

I personally have never even heard about this until I saw this thread at the top of the pre-allo pile today.

TBH you probably wouldn't have unless you were a FL resident, it's been in the papers for over a year while it was getting accreditation.

Comparing new FL schools, FIU is in its second year. Still received 4000 applications for 80 spots. Even though it's late in the cycle, I imagine FAU will be competitive

I honestly know nothing of this program. The thing I find odd is when I looked it up earlier in the season there was simply no information about this happening at all, (other than 1 or 2 news articles about the possibility) so I thought the idea of a class entering in 2011 was hearsay. Now that they are coming out with an application (still supposedly), I still know nothing about this program, other than what it once was under UM. Why didn't FAU get more info on the website? Possible reasons to come there, etc.

I definitely have nothing against the newer med schools, but this just seems odd. I take it they are starting off with a large class because they've previously housed one? The other new med schools had to start with a much lower number. It's all just weird. I don't like weird in my app cycle. 😉

That is for a reason. It is illegal to advertise admissions until the LCME gives official approval for Phase 3 of the LCME accreditation process aka prelim accreditation, which is the phase ur future school FIU med and also my potentially future school if all works out UCF is in. FAU med is pretty much a sure bet to get this but LCME only meets at distinct times of the year and Feb 1-3 is the meeting time this year in DC. I had a nice conversation with Dean Hinkley today on the phone and he was finally able to talk after not being able to talk all these months til things were a go ahead.

He's the one who told me that probably within the next week things will be up and running.

If u don't believe me call him urself. His number is on there.

Dr. Hinkley is a no nonsense person. He always has been as long as I've known him and REL of UCF med they've both been no nonense people. Anyone from Dean Hinkley's 18 year era as dean of admissions at UMiami med will tell u he is no nonsense. Dr. Ted Williams of USF, dr. Specter of USF, REL formerly of USF MD admissions and now UCF MD admissions will tell u he is no nonense. He'd not have told me the stuff he did today if he was spitting out a load of crap. Just saying. And I've met Hinkley a few times at med forums when I was a younger undergrad student. so I know him well enough to know that.

Thanks for the info, guju. Wasn't calling you a liar or anything, just thought it was weird, if nothing else, because they decided to not wait until c/o 2016. It's just I'd not heard of much precedence for this type of late application. No biggie really. I don't have a reason to call him, as I'm not interested in FAU.

As long as there are people interested in becoming physicians, no med school (new or otherwise) would really see a reduction in applicants. I think bleargh was referring to the fact that you can apply to this school via AMCAS so late that might affect its competitiveness. Especially if, as you said, FL residents are the ones primarily interested in it.

I would think that most people holding an acceptance are not motivated to pay for a primary/secondary, or write secondary essays.

Starting with the charter class entering in the fall of 2011, the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine will admit up to 64 students to each first year class, including approximately 10 students who may be admitted from states other than Florida. Within the total class size of 64 students, a maximum of 10 students may be admitted to the dual MD/PhD program sponsored jointly by the College of Medicine and The Scripps Research Institute.
