Someone asked Fauci if two masks give more protection than one. He said yes.

Thats what the article says

He never made any recommendation about wearing two masks

How does he lose credibility for answering a question in a way that we all would agree is likely true?

The same way making $400k/yr after decades of public service in one of the highest medical leadership roles in the country loses him credibility even if it’s half of what someone makes doing mediocre breast enlargements or driving an academic department into the ground.

Somebody of his stature should know how his words are going to be interpreted. Replying that is makes sense and would likely be more effective is not to far off from saying 'wear two masks' to the American public.

Your state government requires, "Two masks at all times in public, or a $1000 fine."

Your local school board votes, "Kids can't come back to school for a year because we don't have 'doublemasks' in the budget."

Congress: "Air travel is illegal until you've had both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines."

All give the reason: "Because Fauci says, 'Two is better than one."

Have to agree with you on the messaging issue.

Fauci is a smart guy, and well qualified for his job. If I'm not mistaken, he was the founding editor for Harrison's internal medicine textbook.

He initially said we'd need '65%' vaccine compliance to reach herd immunity, and then changed it to '85%'. When a nytimes reporter asked why, his response was 'well it'll convince more people to get vaccinated', which is terrible messaging, and ridiculous. Even if true, why the hell are you telling this to a NYT reporter?!!! Stuff like this is going to erode his credibility.

As for saying 2 masks are better than one, I think there are studies that looked at that, and it showed reduced transmission. That's not nearly as problematic to me as what I mentioned above.

Aside from Bravo, raise your hand in this thread if you voted for Trump.
Amazing how you all can jump on Fauci for this and meanwhile let Trump go for his reckless behavior and bad example to the masses, i.e. not wearing a mask, belittle wearing it, turning it into a political issue, etc.

Ok, maybe not 'founding editor', but he is an editor of the textbook...

Classic whataboutism

Saying “yes, if you wore two masks it makes sense that it would be more effective than one” is a long way from any of those things. He didn’t even recommend two masks. He answered a direct question.

However, I do agree that he needs to realize that what he says basically is taken as a recommendation by laypeople. My stepdad texted me with “Fauci is now saying we need to wear two masks—the guy just wants to stay in the limelight!” He also voted for Trump, thinks covid is just a flu, and went to McDonald’s during his quarantine after an exposure. So he’s a little biased.

I'm just confused by the concern. I have no concern about people wearing two masks. His statement was true and it would be reasonable for people to double up on cloth masks to improve efficacy. My concern is that a year into this, we're still talking about how many ****ty homemade cloth masks you need to wear because somehow we still don't have appropriate medical-grade PPE for healthcare professionals and the population. My concern is that a year later, there's still "controversy" about masking. It's the people who won't mask that we should be concerned about, not the people who might now double up.

I'd rather listen to Fauci than antimaskers and conspiracy theories that are widespread.

Also nothing what he said is controversial

Controversial? no. Silly? Yes. I can envision Monty Python sketches of old English ladies walking around with 20 masks on their face, and dropping dead from asphyxiation. Ministry of Silly Masks

That certainly will stop asymptomatic spread.

Does it really make sense that two masks are better than one? At least w/ surgical masks? I seem to recall some papers purporting that a jerry rigged apparatus to tighten a surgical mask over one's mouth and nose could cause it to achieve N95-type rates of filtration. So the solution, at least w/ surgical masks, would seem to be one of tightness rather than filtration.

Lol but still better than not wearing any masks and dying from bad clots.

The house of medicine has clowned itself with regards to Covid-19.

Why not just duct tape your mouth and nostrils shut. After all, not breathing is a far more effective way to avoid the virus than any mask.

“You’re anti-intellectual if you question Fauci!” Seriously, that’s how some people are programmed to think. Of course Fauci is an intelligent guy, but that doesn’t make him perfect or above critique. Especially from fellow physicians like we are.

You're exactly right. The same people who were screaming, "Worthless if not peer reviewed!" and "Hard data! RTCs only! Or shut-up you anti-science ingrate!" "Science! Science! Science!" a few weeks ago, now are all in a deep, unconcerned, purple haze, saying,

"H e y . . . i f . . . F a u c i . . . s a y s . . i t s . . c o m m o n . . . s e n s e . . . i t ' s . . g o o d . . .e n o u g h . . f o r . . m e , b r o . . . "

Hard No.

I thought hcq was ridiculous from the beginning and think double masking is silly.

Also, what's with people wearing masks outside now? It seems like over the past 6 weeks or so this has become a thing around here, people seem to be glaring at me for not wearing one while I run or hike. That's not what airborne means.

Most people don’t understand how disease transmission works.

So now he says there's no data to indicate that two masks will make a difference. The dude is all over the place. The original Tweeter(?) posted a YouTube video that shows the full length interview and states it wasn't taken out of context. I'm not watching a 30 minute interview but will just take their word for it at this point. I don't see a date on the YouTube interview but regardless if it was before or after his other comments are irrelevant.

He's been all over the place since this all started, often changing his position and contradicting himself week to week. I think he enjoys the limelight too much and his celebrity status has led to him doing too many interviews.

I’m starting to feel bad for Fauci, at this point.

I think he realized he made a mistake and is just trying to walk it back.
He should just say, "I made a mistake" or "I didn't properly verbalize my thoughts" instead of just saying one thing one day and then saying something opposite the next. Either that or he should just quit doing interviews.

Yeah. Almost like he’s dealing with a new virus that we made assumptions about that turned out to be disproven by the facts that we later discovered through science. As comforting and terrifying as an omniscient virology wizard would be, knocking someone for not being one seems like setting the standard too high.

You mean a respiratory virus with a predictable spread pattern, and typical epidemiology?

"Two is better than one" is official CDC policy now. Just wait until they us it as an excuse to keep kids out of school longer ("one mask in budget, not two!") harass and fine people, or require "two vaccines" or "two negative tests" to keep you and I off airplanes, out of restaurants or otherwise controlled, restricted, or your business shut down. Is this about science? Or control?

As it should be. The surgical masks we're using (and the ones they use in the OR) are 3 layer.

You realize that saying a mask should have two layers is not the same as saying you should wear two masks right? Every mask I own has at least two layers. Come on dude. They’re saying you should wear a real mask and not just a t-shirt mask or a bandana anymore.

Yes, I realize that. What the CDC is now saying is much dumber than that.

First, the CDC told the general population not to wear surgical masks. Then they said they must wear surgical masks. Now, they're again saying the general population should not wear surgical mask, at all. And don't wear a shield or a mask with vents. Or a ski mask. Or a gater. Unless you wear two gaters. Or one gater folded one over. Wha-?

Are we going to wear "two gaters" in the OR now? From "masks save lives" to "Gaters don't save lives, but double-gaters do!"

Read the CDC document, here and tell me they haven't become a Confusopoly:

That makes no sense. It's laughable. Are we going to wear "two gaters" in the OR now?

Read the CDC document, here and tell me they haven't upped the buffoonery a notch:

It disturbs me that a physician seems to be having this much trouble understanding this concept.

Did you read the CDC document?

When you do, please give me to the CDCs evidence or data that "double gaiters" save more lives than surgical masks, for the general population.

You didn't even read the CDC document, did you?

I did. I’m not sure what buffoonery you’re talking about. It seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Make sure your mask has at least two layers.
Don’t wear a mask with a vent that will let you breathe all over people.
Don’t just wear a face shield.
If you’re wearing a gaiter instead of a mask, fold it up so it’s two layers.
Don’t wear surgical masks/n95s so we can save them for healthcare workers.

What part of this is bothering you?

Read the CDC document, here. Tell me it's not confusing and ridiculous:

What's confusing? The link you provided is pretty simple to follow, even for someone without a medical education. As a follow-up, do you believe the pandemic is a static event that has not evolved or changed from when it first started? Did we know everything about the virus that was important starting in mid-March? Everyone's "Yay Science!" then when they actually see science happening, they're "this is BS, they should have gotten it right from the beginning". You can fetishize consistency, but it's going to come at the cost of a world-view that deviates further and further from reality.
