Favorite journal subscriptions?

How do you guys piece together what's going on in medicine these days and where the field is headed? I'd love some recommendations for magazine, blog, etc. subscriptions that will casually bring me up to speed. Preferably not too expensive. I'm an incoming MS1 if that makes any difference.

Check out the medscape app for smartphones. It contains short articles about news, research and professional medical opinions on all specialties. The app is free, and I love it because the articles are short and too the point.

No, PNAS is a general science journal like Nature. Read JAMA, NEJM, the Lancet, or the most highly regarded journal of the specialty in which you are interested.

Some NEJM articles are free. I read a post here saying that NEJM has an app that sounds like it will allow you complete access to the current issue of NEJM. I haven't checked it out myself, but if free is what you're looking for you might want to look into it.

Your medical school may have institutional access to some of them.

Following relevant institution or journals on Twitter has been helpful to me. they often tweet some of the more knows worthy stuff so I don't have to keep up with everything.

Ahhh the innocence of a incoming MS1 with so much energy and ambition. I was given free subscriptions to both NEJM and JAMA and the only thing I use them for are as book ends. The clinical cases are good from NEJM, but they are only useful after you started pathology

MS1, don't spend much time with journals. If you feel strongly about doing some skimming, NEJM and JAMA are reasonable. Your library likely offers access.

As a resident, I get several paper journals but also have them electronically through my library (app options include docphin, BrowZine, read by qx MD...or qx med or something like that). I skim ~15 journals in EM, critical care, trauma, along with NEJM and JAMA.

I would say InStyle, Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Allure, Cosmo, People, and Women's Health. Those are the irreducible minimum.

Another MS1. Do not have any time to read anything that's not in physio, biochem, path, micro or pharm at the moment.

If you're sub-MS4, keep your reading to outside interests... keep your sanity.

/full disclosure, I have about 3 weeks left in residency, and I probably could have read more, but in general I'm reasonably up to date.
