I have a $25 gift card from Office Depot burning a hole in my pocket (btw, who the heck buys someone an Office Depot gift card??? Ridiculous!!!). Anyway, the only thing I could really use from there is pens because we use all paper charts.

I just use cheapo Bics, but recently I bought a decent pen (some Pilot gel pen) and it opened my eyes to the world of nice pens.

What are your favorite pens for work?

Well...my favorite pens are not available at Office Depot, but they are worth it.

Levenger true writer ballpoint pen.

The Market Penmaker at Pike's Market in Seattle - this gentleman has a booth in the market and makes handmade wooden pens that are amazing both in beauty and function.

I also use a Sheaffer ballpoint.

How much do the pen's cost?

I second the Pilot G-2 07. Doesn't smudge, dark, legible. Dirt cheap, bought by the dozen. Has refills available.

Best. pen. ever. Looks classy, writes smoothly, and balances nicely in the hand. And you can buy refill cartridges when they die.

Pilot .07. The .05 writes too slow.

Depends which one. The true writer from levenger ranges in price. You can find them onsale from $30 up.

Schaeffer - the cheapest I've ever seen is $8, but usually $15+

The Market Place Pen Maker at Pike's market also range. I think the lowest price he has pens for is $35 or $40. These are very nice, unique handmade pens.

pilot G2 0.5 blue ink
I haven't been able to find anything other than the 0.7s lately (at least in bulk packaging) so I've actually been using some generic office depot 0.5 gel pen. not retractable, though, so not ideal.

I second this. I borrowed one from a med student a couple years ago, and I have been loyal to the Zebra ever since. I swear my handwriting is better when using one of these.

Tul (pronounced Tool) pens, but i think they're an OfficeMax thing.

0.5mm retractable gels..😍mmm, but the rollerball and ballpoints aren't bad either.

I like to use PEN 15, but that's just me.

Apollyon's got it right. They have a nice dark, non-smudging ink. People who borrow one of them always say the same thing...."wow...this thing writes so smooth!"

agree with the zebra. once you try it you'll never want to leave. make sure you get the .7, most in stores are .9 which arent as good

Montblanc 149 with a fine nib.....a must have for anyone interested in fine writing instruments.

Another vote for Zebra

I like to use PEN 15, but that's just me.

My friend asked me to join the pen 15 club many times in 6th grade. I thought I was cool, and then my mom saw my official pen 15 club stamp. She wasn't too proud of me.

I'm a zebra guy too.

Except when it comes to ddx...then, not so much.

Yeah, some gels are very comfortable, but they seem to smear a lot for me so I never buy them.

I'm going to have to put in 1 vote for pilot's new "center of gravity" Dr. Grip. Writes very smoothly and is even recommended by the arthritis association.

Whatever smudgy gel pens Staples currently has on sale.

I purchased their Staples brand pack last month. It was something ridiculous like 30 pens for $3.

Heck, they could smudge/be "borrowed"/dry up, and it would still be cost-effective for me.

Pilot G2 0.7 or 1.0

I'm partial to the Foray 0.5mm Precision Point

Similar to the Zebra pen, but ever so slightly different...

I like the Forays too but they're spendy at ~$5 a pop and I feel too bad when I lose them (I know none of you guys ever lose pens but I do occasionaly😉). I've been using some very inexpensive papermate click tops for the last year or so.

I know that I feel a sense of pride whenever I actually run a pen dry rather than losing it first.

Which pen is:

Smoothest
Darkest
Most ergonomical
Most reliable

I love, love the Apex pens but they keep getting airbubbles and stop writing before their time 🙁. Would love to find a reliable replacement.

1. your allowed to use blue pens? always thought it had to be black so the lawyers could photocopy it better 😛

2. zebra but some can be heavy, when writing a lot this is painful

3. no more freebies...damn guess its time to drop out of med school and go into my backup profession of clown college 😛

I'm quite picky about pens, and like a fine point that isn't scratchy plus a decent grip. I take a Dr. Grip gel pen by Pilot because the grip is awesome. The problem is that the tip is a think 0.7 mm. So I buy a bunch of Pilot G2 ultra fine pens (tip is 0.38 mm) and swap out the tip, putting it into the Dr. Grip. It's awesome, and I don't let anyone borrow it.

Wow... Great idea!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

regnevejr those write nice and smooth, but the grip sucks after a while
Nice and thin, easier on your fingers. You soon get used to not have to squeeze so hard, and can just keep writing. With the fine tip, you can get a lot of info on a page.
