Beethoven.

His 6th and 7th by Karajan are amazing, as is the Moonlight Sonata (if only it was longer).

One of two options: 1) NO lyrics - I will just start singing along. 2) If I do not know the song/lyrics.

I can't read or study anything math or science with ANY music, unless it's sort of Starbucky-in the background. Am I alone?

^^I usually put it on for like 10 minutes before I start if I'm having a really hard time making myself sit down and get stuff done. Once I start actually studying I have to turn it off, blast the fun, can't have any distracting noise. I hate earplugs too so the fan becomes mandatory

Thank you for not making me feel like a freak. 🙂

Yep, I get so jealous when I see these kids rocking out to music while studying... If I try to do that, I can keep reading and reading a line, but it will never get committed to memory. Weak sauce.

Oh well. Could be worse.

yeah it sucks doesn't it? I wish I could study in the library or a coffeeshop...that only works for light reading :/

The Peatbog Faeries
Bon Iver
The Duhks
Norah Jones
The Black Crowes
Joshua Bell
The Dixie Chicks
Enya
The "Once" Soundtrack
The "Garden State" Soundtrack

...I have a pretty eclectic taste in music...

Roland Dyens - classical guitarist, real soothing music for those intense study sessions that we've all grown to love

Reading/Studying:
Aphex Twin
Explosions in the Sky
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Red Sparrow
Mogwai
Yndi Halda
Royksopp
Paco de Lucia
Steve Reich
Phillip Glass

Writing (needs to be more uptempo or I get bored...):
Bad Religion
The Pogues
The Tossers
Flogging Molly
Killswitch Engage
Metallica
Disturbed
Dead Kennedys
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Led Zeppelin

Wow that was long... I tend to be kind of all over the place

A lot of Jazz, (Coltrane, Jaco, Miles, etc.) but mainly Tiesto because it keeps me awake on those late nights

For me, it's always Billy Idol, Iggy Pop, PiL, or a classic rock station.

I've never even heard of most of the artists listed in this thread!

RJD2
Gorillaz
Radiohead
Nas-Illmatic
Classical--anything with lots of piano like Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Chopin

AtG

ps. this thread rocks!

Stars of the Lid
Fennesz
Greg Davis
Max Richter
Tim Hecker
Boards of Canada
Mum
Album Leaf
Four Tet

Sometimes I end up on classical, sometimes on soundtracks (the Dark Knight OST is awesome, btw). But I tend to go with post-rock for studying--mono, sigur ros, and a string quartet (not Kronos) whose name I cannot currently recall... Godspeed You Black Emperor would probably also be good, but I haven't tried studying to them lately.🙂

Ha! Dirty Three is the group I was looking for! They're a trio and not a quartet, after all.

whatever annoying beyonce song is stuck in my head...

If I'm reading I need complete silence; but if I'm just grinding through O Chem problems and the what not I just throw the Pod on shuffle.

Look at everyone with their sophistication. I'll break the trend.

Video game OSTs!

-Final Fantasy VIII & X
-Chrono Trigger/Cross
-Xenogears

etc. etc.

Lyrics distract me so I can't listen to any of the stuff I usually do.
