Bela Fleck and the Flecktones: Live at the Quick.
Any Bob Dylan.

Wow. Im impressed by what other people put above me. Usually people are like "Who???" When I tell them those bands and that I like them 🙂

For me study music would have to be something w/o lyrics tho. So I go with STS9 or Aphex Twin.

hanz zimmer or any classic rock

soft rock works too.

listening to Dream Theater is so soothing to me, even their heavy stuff. Familiar with Aphex Twin, but not STS9... googling now.

I just put the iPod on shuffle and hit next until I hit something suitable for my mood, the results of which are buried invisibly in here.

Waiting for my new iPod to show up.

Lol, I do the exact same thing. Though when I'm studying, I usually end up on some type of folk music. Ray LaMontagne, Nick Drake, Dylan of course, Iron & Wine, and the like.

definitely best music for me is without lyrics - which is usually classical. beethoven, mozart, chopin, and a few other big name composers.

none. it's too distracting to study with music because the lyrics makes me think about other stuff.

The only music that should be listened to when studying is Bon Jovi, Metallica, or Led Zeppelin. Everyone knows this.

Sometimes I end up on classical, sometimes on soundtracks (the Dark Knight OST is awesome, btw). But I tend to go with post-rock for studying--mono, sigur ros, and a string quartet (not Kronos) whose name I cannot currently recall... Godspeed You Black Emperor would probably also be good, but I haven't tried studying to them lately.🙂

thats interesting. i get into "live at the quick" way too much, which makes it hard to concentrate.

I like to sing along, so anything with lyrics that I can follow are a definite no-go.

Something light and soothing - I prefer a female singer with a jazzy/bluesy feel. Like Adele, KT Tunstall, or Norah Jones.

Ah, yeah. That reminds me! Madeleine Peyroux is great for studying or just relaxing in general!😀

I have study playlist on the ole iPod with AIR, Zero 7, U.N.K.L.E., and Underworld. I also listen to Pink Floyd (mostly the "Wish You Were Here" album)... they all get the brain waves nice and in sync

For me, the songs all blend into each other so effortlessly that I almost forget that I'm listening to music. That is, until the song comes on where the guy starts doing those crazy frog-like chants. At that point, I remember that I'm studying, I change the song, and then I continue kicking ass, taking names, etc.

👍 I just started listening to some of her stuff, she has a very timeless sound.

lounge-radio.com is pretty good stuff.

For both of these reasons, I listen to music to pass the time, not when I am doing something that requires brain power...

Although Madeleine Peyroux is very good👍

I think the Fight Club soundtrack is great for studying.

Here's another vote for DREAM THEATER! I'm listening to them right now actually (their Awake cd).

Others I love studying to include:
Opeth
Katatonia
Isis
Swallow the Sun
My Dying Bride
Acid Bath
Agents of Oblivion
The Liquid Tension Experiment

My Blues collection
Nas
Wu tang
Ratatat
Metric
Some metal

Just browsed your tracks. LOVE the mars volta. maybe not as study music though 🙄

I listen to Jazz while studying. Miles Davis mainly. Sometimes other instrumental groups like STS9 will do the trick 🙂. I can't really listen to anything upbeat/with lyrics or I will sing along and lose concentration.

Beatles doesn't work, there is this overwhelming urge to sing along or to close your eyes and pretend you're on an acid trip (who am I to refuse when Lennon says "picture yourself on a boat on a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies"), so it really impedes on studying.

Wow, Myuu, you like the exact same music my boyfriend does. 🙂 I can't believe someone else has even heard of the Protomen. He drove all the way to Chicago to watch that (I myself have never seen it, though).

Movie soundtracks by Hans Zimmer (Dark Knight and Pirates of the Carib are pretty good)

or

Any of the classical music genre stations on Pandora.

I'm surprised at all good music listed above by other SDNers.

I usually keep pandora on with similar bands like Ratatat or classical music. No lyrics means more studying for me.

i like to listen to alternative rock on radio.

lullabies written by various composers.

Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year... o/`

Yes - usually Yessongs but most albums will do.
Philip Glass
King Crimson
Moody Blues
Nas - Illmatic
Deltron - 3030
Fleet Foxes
Ratatat
Steely Dan
Scarface - Emeritus
Umphrey's Mcgee
Warren Zevon
Frank Zappa

I thought that was confidential, but I guess you've got potential 😛

South by Southwest Festival has released like 8GB of free music from bands that you can get from torrent sites (LEGAL). I'm trying to broaden my horizon.

Good bands? (No, seriously!)

It's all indie. Found a few interesting songs. But it's like a potluck dinner..... Some Thai, some vegan, some meat and potatoes...

Yeah, that's the trouble with free music. Most of the bands offering things for free tend to... not be good.😳

Anamanaguchi is a decent band with a brand new free album out if anyone's into chiptune.👍

Moe. on my Itunes, and listen to the instrumental bluegrass station on pandora (pandora is great)

The Album Leaf will make you love studying. Maybe some Girl Talk if i'm just reviewing. Gotta have the energy!

I listen to mostly classical type music- nothing with words I can sing too lol. I have a few cds with just the violin playing which works for me. I prefer music I don't attempt play on any instruments though because then I just listen for how it's played by the pro.

I can't listen to anything I know too well, nor can I stand to listen to classical. I stick to XM channel 47, which is a mix of alt rock, when I have my laptop with me. Otherwise I have to change my playlist every few weeks.

I cycle between trance music and string quartets(kodaly, alban berg) depending on what subject I'm studying.

Depends on what I am studying, but I like Iron and Wine, as somebody has already mentioned, Regina Spektor, Feist (although sometimes Feist makes me want to sing along too much), Fleet Foxes, CSNY, Pink Floyd, or, for the orchestra nerd in me, Shostakovich and Mahler.
