Hi,

Anybody know anyone who has participated in this program? I'm talking about at the post-residency level. If you work in one of their underserved areas is it a pretty sure thing that you'll be accepted into the program or are there very limited people accepted? Just trying to help someone pick a job and this is something that is turning out to be a pretty big deal in the decision making process but you can only apply to the program once you accept the position.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Hey there, I know people that have went through it. They loved it and ended up staying there too.

I spent all four years of med school in rural track and we talked about the program extensively. You must make sure all the qualifications are met, but if your paperwork is correct, you meet the qualifications, and nobody beats you to it then it goes through without much trouble.

First you must be in an approved specialty, and all paperwork must be filled out correctly (that goes without saying but for completness sake). Then you must be applying for a county that is not just underserved, but underserved according to THEIR list.

The thing you have to watch is that county coming off the list of "underserved" before your application goes through. That has happened before and no, they don't get the deal. They only have X number of spots for each county, if those spots are filled before your application goes through then you won't get the deal.

If you have a county that you want to go to that is not on the list all is not lost. Many county governments will make a similar deal with you if you approach them individually (many times it's easier with less paperwork and done in person which is more comfortable).

Anyway, that's what I learned in Rural Track, hope it helps. And please double check because things change and I haven't been formally instructed in this matter in way over a year.
