Hi so i have searched the forums for some good reading material and found lots of good books to read etc.. But i want to know more.. I want to know everything there is to know about med-school, residency, and the practice of medicine in general, all the ins and outs..

I'm looking for specific works on individual fields such as topics in academic/research medicine, psychiatry, surgery, etc.. I'm not asking what they are, I just want a very detailed account of what various fields of medicine.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on more specific information on various fields of medicine? Sorry if i'm not being specific but hopefully someone knows what I mean..

For internal medicine, watch House. For surgery, try greys anatomy, emergency medicine? ER. If you want to know ALL of the truly finer points of medicine, watch scrubs in its entirety. You're welcome.

WebMD, I really hope that was sarcasm. For neuro I'd suggest Brain Matters (neurology or neuropsych but by a neurologist detailing interesting cases).

I thought MSAR was just a bunch of statistics for med-school applicants and matriculants, if so thats obviously not what i'm looking for..

BlueElmo: I have spent enough time here to realize that honest questions get typical (mostly unhelpful), responses from people who just like to hear themselves talk..

I hope you guys are kidding about not being able to pick up on the sarcasm, otherwise your patients are going to be running circles around you . And if you're criticizing my suggestions because they're fiction, except for Scrubs (I don't want to be a doc unless there's some truth to that show), some of the best explanations of medicine are fictional books. Ever heard of the House of God? Try that for internal medicine, although it's dated. Mount Misery is Samuel Shem's follow up which focuses on psychiatry. Intern Blues by Dr. Robert Marion is a great look at internship, Hot Lights Cold Steel for surgery by Dr. Michael Collins, and the making of a surgeon in the 21st century by Dr. Craig Miller. Lighten up.

I read "Another Day in the Frontal Lobe" and would recommend it to anyone, especially those interested in medicine. It's full of anecdotes about the strange cases a brain surgeon has seen, and a bit about life as a physician in general. Not really an overview of different specialties which is I think what you're looking for, but definitely an interesting read.

I have been watching Hopkins the TV show recently, talking about Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore..it's pretty interesting...it also shows the not-so-glamorous side of medicine...I like it ..=) just my 0.02

Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a good book to read as a pre-med.
