General Admissions & OTCAS Feeling defeated.... Do I even have a chance at OT?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I went to cincinnati my freshman year and didn't get a gpa above a 3.0 and transferred. If I were you I don't know that I would really worry all that much. I also wouldn't even retake anatomy and phys if you already retook them and got B's. But look into the programs that you want to go to, each is different with grade requirements for prereqs and some schools only look at your last 60 credit hours.

Feel free to message me if you have any more questions or need to talk!

I agree ^^ don't retake AP. You retook and got a decent grade.

I would definitely take Bio, Chem, and/or Physics to show that you can handle the sciences.

My school only offers anatomy and physiology separately and I was nervous that OT schools wanted A&P 1/2 since that was what they listed on their websites, but both forms are fine- not one is preferred over the other as long as you have a lab in both. I am surprised they told you that since most schools list A&P 1/2 as prereqs, not anatomy and physiology separately.

I actually took anatomy and physiology separately and only my anatomy had a lab (it was a cadaver lab) and I haven't had any problems with schools because of it.

I still think you have a chance! keep your head up! remember observation hours and excellent letters or rec play a pretty big part in the application process

My experience with admissions is that perfection is not required if you 1) show self-reflection on why past mistakes were made 2) have started to overcome these mistakes and 3) have a plan for future success. You've already proven that you know how to overcome academic adversity, which may be a skill you'll need again when faced with graduate studies. (As all of us might!) It seems like you are well on your way. Best of luck to you!

You definitely have a shot! Like mentioned earlier in the thread, many schools look more heavily at your prerequisite GPA and last 60 unit GPA. The key is making yourself memorable when the applicant read your personal statement and getting good LOR. GPA and GRE are only part of the admission criteria.

Thank you everyone! I've been beating myself up over my freshman/sophomore grades, so it's nice to get some insight from a supporting community. So another question, since I retook a&p 1/2 does my prereq GPA include the Ds from my freshman year? Or does it depend on the school?

It delends on the school. At NYU's info session, the admissions director told us to just pick one class, obviously the one you got a higher grade in, to count towards your pre req gpa- i.e. sociology or anthropology, advanced stats or elementary stats- but they will still see both grades when reviewing your transcripts.

Don't sweat your GPA, youre going to have a 3.5+, 3.9 pre req after you ace the rest of your classes. Most applicants will have around the same stats. Make yourself unique through your volunteer experiences, essay, and LORs.

If you're nervous, apply to some programs that are new or only in candidacy status, at least as backups. It's more of a two-way street with them than in the big, established programs that get 500+ apps -- they are much more willing to overlook flaws and work with imperfect candidates, since you're taking a chance on them. (Obviously, there's some risk involved there, so be sure that's something you can be comfortable with.)
