I made a map of the available fellowships with lil' database of location, name, fellowship director. Hoping it helps residents who are interested in fellowship to see what options are out there. If there are any inaccuracies or if I missed any programs, please lmk - fastest way to notify me is email at [email protected]. It's pretty easy to edit, I've had lots of ppl reach out on IG to get stuff added, I can usually get it up in a day or two.

This is great information. Thanks for compiling. All I can think though is why are there 98 fellowships? OMG, this is way worse than I thought.

When I finished residency in 2012, I feel like there were like 5? And that was plenty to meet the foot and ankle surgical demand of the country.

Truly hilarious all the mediocre podiatry private practices that are now considered a "fellowship"...
Would never want to work at them, much less "train" at them. Only in podiatry.

I get it somewhat for MD/DO or dent as a fellowship truly changes your specialty/capability, but simpy not the case for DPMs.

...For podiatry, maybe 10% of these "fellowships" are truly quality cases and attendings, but still nothing you didn't get in a good residency and no additional certification. The vast majority are nothing except a wasted year of low pay; they add very lttle (even if you did a bad residency). They are a byproduct of the miserable job market: a way to buy time and try to add something on the CV. We are grasping at straws as a profession here; it's sad.

But “fellowship” looks sexy on their LinkedIn profile underneath the USFAS or Upperline job they inevitably have to take.

Podiatry PP and small ortho PP pod found a new gold mine: start a fellowship!

Why hire an associate when you can pay a fellow $50k?

New grads can’t find a good job, so they do a fellowship hoping it will help them stand out.

Guess what? Still the same limited number of good jobs.

A good number of “fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeons” still end up working in PP doing chip and clip.

Meanwhile, the fellowship practice gets cheap labor, makes money off the fellow, and gets to advertise itself as a “fellowship training program” to enrich themselves and get industry consultants job.

Oh, and the fellow takes free call too.

But don’t worry, they’re told they can log an ABFAS case!

There are maybe a dozen fellowships in the country that are worth their salt (for the right applicant), the rest are a complete unregulated scam as described above.

I continue to love how the interviews are with current students or current fellows, nobody with any real life experience who still blinded by the realities of the profession.
