I was just curious what the trick is for defering your loans while you are in a fellowship program?

For me, I'll be using all three years of the economic hardship deferment for residency, and then if I want to do a fellowship -- what then?

Ideas?

Thanks.

Why are you asking here? This is specific to your particular loans. Some of your loans may extend the deferment longer, while others may not. Ask your lenders or whoever holds your loans at this time.

No need to be so pissy. If you don't have an answer, just don't respond.

In response to the OP, if you have federal student loans (which comprises the majority of loans for most recent grads), I believe you can apply for a Graduate Fellowship Deferment. Here is the link: http://www.dlssonline.com/defer/defer-req.asp?DeferId=is_gf

But I would also be interested in hearing from someone who has done or is doing a fellowship and might be better able to answer this question based on experience.

You can always do forbearance (meaning interest builds and it cut into your payback time). They must give you forbearance regardless of income and loan payment until done with residency, which applies to every specialty since deferment only lasts 2 years. Once in fellowship, if your loan payments are greater than 20% of gross monthly income, you can apply for an extra 3 years of forbearance.

If you haven't consolidated your student loans, I heard that after you consolidate you may qualify for another 3 years of economic hardship deferment.

If you are applying for forbearance, interest on subsidized and unsubsidized loans will accrue during that time period.

Hi

I have a question: Can we consolidate all the loans (not only Federal). I will have close to 200,000.
