Very much depends on the type of research and the type of residency you are in. Generally your research in residency will be what matters, but having relevant research during medical school will help buff your CV.

My end goal, at least for now, is to be a GI. I know that’s a competitive fellowship so I’m working my way back to plan. Like, I’m guessing a prestigious IM residency with a lot of research funds will help as publications are important for this fellowship I know.
Taking that back to Med school, I’m thinking a Med school with good research and that’s prestigious will help me match into a competitive IM program?
But I’m so naive about this, I don’t know if that makes sense. I’m deciding now basically between a somewhat no name state school and a more expensive but well-known school with more research.. but still it’s only a “mid tier” like top 50s if you go by research funding, and residency director opinion survey scores from US News. Also I’m factoring in med school location in proximity to competitive residencies as I see from match lists that location plays a role.
How much should I factor in my med school to my end goal of matching a competitive fellowship?
One thing builds on the next. If you want to match in GI, try to get GI research, a case report, etc. Get involved in their department, go to grand rounds when you can, etc. Of course you have to also suck up to the IM folks because they’re your gateway.

Thanks for the tips. So do you think GI research in med school still helps? Could it help land me a good IM residency or is not relevant to matching IM?

Yes.
You need to do better than most on your USMLE, and you need to do better than most on your pre clinical and 3rd year grades. If you really want to go from a very average medical school to a competitive IM program and a competitive fellowship, you’re going to have to work for it, in medical school and during your residency.
