This is a hypothetical situation, but if I was driving drunk in Canada, convicted of grand theft in the United Kingdom, or convicted of homosexuality in Egypt (where it can carry life in prison) will AMCAS background checks be able to catch it?

I would guess not. It's probably similar to getting an IA at a non-accredited school (ie the kind you see advertised on daytime television). If you committed a crime which can be found through a Google search, then you may have some trouble.

Isn’t AMCAS used by Canadian schools as well?

Your first question should not be can it be found in a criminal background check (CBC) but "do I have to report it on the application?" If you are going to take "have you ever been convicted of a felony?" at face value, then yes, you should report your felony conviction for homosexual behavior in Egypt or drunk driving in Canada or grand theft in England on your application. Whether those jurisdictions report to the keeper of records (FBI?) in the US such that the record would come up on your US rap sheet, I have no idea but I don't believe that it would. INTERPOL might be where law enforcement can get a criminal background check that includes crimes committed in other Interpol member countries but I doubt that it is consulted for the CBC done by med schools.

One should hypothetically live with integrity and be honest on their AMCAS application and disclose this. If one weren't going to be honest, one should hypothetically pull their official certiphi background check using the code CERTAP2018 (or similar) and see what comes up. If you want to see pre-submission, do an FBI background check.

My answer to this question is: I don't know but I HOPE the certiphi background check would foreign convictions. They specifically ask for all your residences of the last 10 years (including any foreign addresses!) and they state that they'll check.

If one were to live with integrity, then would homosexuality still be a crime?
I'm not here to discuss the morality of homosexuality. That has nothing to do with the question asked. If you aspire to be a member of a professional organization that requires that you report any and all convictions, I believe it is right to report any and all convictions. Editing our criminal history based on what we think is "right" and "fair" is dangerous, to say the least.

I’m just interested at how Egyptian law enforcement would test/prove someone is gay.

I'm pretty sure Certiphi will do foreign background searches if you list a foreign residence on it anywhere, and they do expect addresses going back quite a while accounting for any gaps. I had an address listed from an internship abroad and my certiphi check got held up a bit because they needed a copy of my passport to run that search. Not entirely sure what they checked, could have been something like interpol or maybe something specific to the country I was working in. So if you have a foreign conviction from a time when you were living in an other country, it very well may come up.

Try this:

Commuting something that is a crime in the US, but not in a foreign country, while in a foreign country 😀

No idea man. If you are asked to provide a felony, that may be indicative of only US felonies within its context. This could get very complex, as some crimes are considered international in themselves. You have some research to do. Maybe contact a lawyer and ask honestly. This is a tough one.

Except at LUCOM or Loma Linda.
Or Baylor.

Had a TA now professor friend get a job offer to teach undergrad at Baylor. Went to sign the contract and literally on his contract, it said [I testify/swear whatever] "That I have never engaged in homosexual sodomy"...

Methinks the med school has a different mindset.

I had who once said of the UG school: "world's largest Baptist penitentiary"
