Hi everyone. Im asking these for a friend. I am helping him with some of his MCAT studies and he has no solutions for these so we arent sure of the answers. What do you guys think? thanks. I have included our answers, some we are fairly certain on and some we do not know.

1. Heat is a form of potential energy. true or false? False

2. Body temperature and blood pH are critical factors in alteration of proteins in normal homeostasis. True or False? False (only because in "normal homeostasis" blood pH and temp are constant)

3. Cells randomly generate enzymes for every known kind of substrate that may be encountered. true or False? False - (for every reaction but not every substrate)

4. Some cells in the body divide only once, and then never divide again, no matter how long they live. true or False? True - neurons.

5. Fill in the word: A bacterial enzyme that splits both strands of the DNA structure simultaneously is called: HELICASE?

6. Diffusion is due to the potential energy of molecules. True or false? False - diffusion is random

thanks again!

1 - false
2 - true ("normal" homeostasis means what exactly)
3 - false
4 - true (not neurons, some neurons can divide. Neurogenesis, albeit rare, occurs).
5. endonuclease
6. tricky question. You would insert energy to position molecules to undergo diffusion, or maybe not. So probably false.

6. Diffusion is due to the potential energy of molecules. True or false? False - diffusion is random

False, diffusion is due to the kinetic energy (heat part of the internal energy) of the molecules. The reason molecules move and diffuse randomly is because they collide, which is because as as long as the molecule is above absolute zero it will have thermal energy which is a form of kinetic energy in this case.

2. Body temperature and blood pH are critical factors in alteration of proteins in normal homeostasis. True or False? False (only because in "normal homeostasis" blood pH and temp are constant)

The right protein structure for a particular protein depends on its range of pH and temperature. Too high or too low for either will destroy the proper protein structure and render it unable to perform its correct functions.

this obviously is some type of homework.

There is no way this is MCAT stuff, it is so poorly worded and general.

...an undergrad intro to physiology class. I'm in it (all these qs are in our homework). Funny to see it passed off as MCAT! And nice to be validated in my impression that it's poorly written and makes little sense. I don't come from a math/science background; I'm angry that I'll show up with enthusiasm and genuine interest, and get sent home with a textbook that's impossible to read, and homework that doesn't make sense. Happened in my statistics class, too. Good school, though! Disappointing. I empathize with my classmate, though I don't understand why s/he would try to pass these off as MCAT questions unless s/he'd knocked on every other door on the internet and found no help.
