he just got his score back today, it was 183. i feel so bad for him. he did almost all of world, scoring about 54% towards the end. read mostly the kaplan books. i don't know what to tell him to do differently (i passed the 1st time). any advice??
ummmmm answer is right there in your question stem. Kaplan books are severely severely outdated and inaccurate. I would go with Premier Review.

I think that Kaplan and USMLE World shouldn't even have been enough for a 183. I am guessing that his clinical experience must have helped. He is close, but will drift even further if he thinks that he was close because of Kaplan.
I think that Premier Review and USMLE World mcqs are the best route to go.
USMLE World is good, but not enough in itself, as you need some consolidated knowledge to apply the concepts taught in the USMLE World mcqs. Those key concepts that will help you to pass are severely severely lacking in the step 3 notes from Kaplan - as a matter of fact, the live lectures presented by Kaplan, drift even further away from the information required to pass USMLE Step 3. The Kaplan teachers are private practitioners - - VERY very far away from academics, and recent material tested on USMLE Step 3. They are so far away from USMLE material, that it is ridiculous that they are charging money for their ridiculous courses.
He can study Kaplan for the rest of his life, and not even come close to attaining the information that the ever changing USMLE requires, or study Premier Review notes with lectures. Then pass in about 5 to 6 weeks, in his case probably even sooner as he is close enough as it is. Just needs to wash that Kaplan garbage out of his system.
If you think that I am wrong or selling something, then feel free to try that same route again. I can almost guarantee that he came that close because of USMLE World and his clinical experience. If anything, Kaplan is detrimental for step 3 purposes.
Good luck.
