I am applying for Dermatopathology Fellowships for 2012-2013. I know there is alot of mystery involved. Thought I'd start this thread to help de-mystify some stuff so that we all know what is actually filled and what isn't...and when we should start having a mental breakdown and applying for surgical pathology because we didn't get in. So far:

Geisinger, Danville, PA--filled 2012-2013 🙁

Wash U
Wake Forest
Tennessee

That's all I can add for now.

UTSW

It's sad, but I think most of the spots for DP are already filled. It might be much easier to list the spots that are still open. Good luck.

Hmm, UTSW is still accepting applications until 9/30. Maybe false information? And sure, many places have people in mind and have probably made offers already (I know NYU has filled at least one spot), but I doubt most of the programs are filled already. Most places are just reaching their application deadlines.

I know for sure that one of the spots was filled about 8 months ago. I thought the second spot was filled as well. I could be wrong.

Yeah, who knows I guess. I do know that for some reason they extended their application deadline to 9/30, so maybe someone backed out and took a different spot. Ah well. From what I've heard you're better off sending applications to places even if they say they're full. Things change all the time.

Agree. I know way too many stories of fellowships filling years in advance then abruptly opening up because the incoming fellow got a more appealing fellowship or simply decided to take an attending job. And those who accept fellowship positions willy nilly due to the existing chaotic framework, then back out of all except the most appealing one at the end. Or those programs who assume their position is filled because they offered or expect to offer it to a known candidate, not because that person actually accepted yet. It goes on and on. Send in your application and ask them to keep you in mind if something comes up. Most programs maintain some sort of list or file.</snip>

Here is my list of dermpath programs that are full:
- Emory
- St. Louis, MO
- Wash U
- Wake Forest
- U Tennessee

Has anyone been able to apply to UMDNJ? I found it impossible to even get them to email me an application. Do they just fill with internal candidates?

Yeah NYU finally mailed out the official "we're full" email. And UMass is only taking derm candidates this year, so cross them off if you're path-trained. Ackerman supposedly has filled 2 of their 4 spots for 12-13 as well. Harvard is interviewing next Sat Dec 11th, so if you didn't get the invite to that consider that closed as well. I'm sure there's more that are closed, but that's all I know for now.

Yeah, I got the NYU mass rejection e-mail. It had my e-mail address and 50 other peoples' e-mail addresses. Classy...NOT! 👎

Interesting...UMass wants a Derm trained fellow. But I did not apply b/c UMass wants a 2-year Dermpath fellow (as per their website). I'm only interested in 1-year Dermpath fellowships. What other Dermpath programs prefer dermatology trained applicants?

Actually UMass never actually was a 2-year program (they should probably update their website). When they started the fellowship that was their original goal, to be a 2-year program with a clinical year and a research year. The problem was that they were only approved for 1 fellow, so they would only really have a dermpath fellow to do clinical work every other year. Not smart. So halfway through the first fellow's year they asked him if he would mind dropping the research year and he had no problem with it, and it's been a 1-year program ever since from what I know. But doesn't matter to me since I'm path anyways!

Northwestern emailed me to say that they are discontinuing their program. So you can cross them off your list too.

Are you sure about that? Why so? Northwestern has the best dermpath fellowship in Chicago (there are only two in Chicago) and Guitart is an expert in CTCL. They also worked on the FISH melanoma study, the first in the world. They and a few other institutions work on the FISH. Why would they discontinue their fellowship. Unless it says so on the website, I have a hard time believing you.

Northwestern discontinuing their program is like Stanford or UCSF discont theirs....doesnt make any sense.

Believe whatever you like. Here's the email:

Dear Applicant,
Thank you for submitting an application for the 2012-2014 Northwestern University Dermatopathology fellowship. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, we will not be offering a fellowship starting in 2012.

We appreciate your interest in our program and wish you the best of luck in your educational pursuits.

Sounds to me like they might be choosing not to fill the 2012 spot to save funds, but doesn't sound like they are closing the entire fellowship program. Maybe I am reading it incorrectly?

Dermpath programs that are full as of 12/7/10:

- Emory
- St. Louis, MO
- Wash U
- Wake Forest
- U Tennessee
- Baylor
- NYU
- Duke
- Geisinger
- UMass (taking Derm only)
- Northwestern (no fellowship 2012)
- UTSW (most likely, nothing official though)

FWIW I would read the Northwestern email as they have no extra money, and won't be offering a derm fellowship from 2012 until they do. If they don't fill for a couple of years they'll have to go through re-accreditation, which isn't that big of a deal if you already have the paperwork from previous accreditation, but is a pain otherwise. IMO a lot can change in 2 years, including whether they find funding late in the game even for 2012. Sounds like typical med school politico-economics, and for the moment their dermpath fellowship is losing out.

Combining all the recent posts. Dermpath programs that are full as of 12/12/10:

- Baylor
- Colorado (they take Derm only, this year they took a derm resident from UMN)
- Duke
- Emory
- Geisinger
- Harvard?
- Northwestern (no fellowship from 2012 onwards)
- NYU
- Penn State Hershey
- St. Louis, MO
- Wash U
- Wake Forest
- UMass? (taking Derm only)
- UCSF
- U Penn
- U Tennessee
- UTSW (most likely, nothing official though)

Also U Boston have sent out interview invitations, so if you haven't been invited you can probably cross them off your list.

Hopkins has been conducting interviews for a while now.

Has anyone been able to apply to dermpath at UMDNJ?

Way lame. That program assistant must be really dumb or really thoughtless to not blind copy everyone's email and send it to herself.

Colorado takes Derm AND Path trained fellows. They have two pathology trained fellows and one dermatology trained fellow this year.

Got official Harvard/BIDMC rejection e-mail today

Are you folks getting interviews at these places, or just rejections?

Are you folks getting interviews at these places, or just rejections?

It's a mix. I've had six interviews, the rest I've either just received the rejection email/letter. Not looking that rosy out there!

I agree. It was looking incredibly bleak for me too for a while. I only received two interview offers. Luckily though, despite the paucity of interviews I've been offered a position and accepted it.

My advice for anyone trying to get a spot is that you have to apply widely and you need to have a thick skin, as you will certainly get plenty of rejections. Doing lots of dermpath electives at carefully chosen locations helped me a lot.

UPMC versus UTSW-Cockerell. What do you think?

Last edited:
Just got offers from UPMC and UTSW-Cockerell. What do you think?

CONGRATS!

I know some graduates from UTSW. They all loved it. You'll see a lot with the high volume. Just be aware that Dr. Cockerell reads slides very fast. Some people like this (less wasted time), some people don't like it (less time to process info and ask questions).

I don't know anything about UPMC.

Dallas, Texas is much warmer than Pittsburgh...less snow (although, there was snow there this past Superbowl week). Dallas is a bigger city w/ more amenities. Texas is a tax-free state.

Have all the positions for 2012 been filled at this stage?

Probably not every spot is full, but we're getting into the nitty-gritty at this point. Here's the most updated list (according to my sources, although I haven't been as diligent lately):

- Arkansas
- Ackerman Academy
- Baylor
- Boston University
- Colorado
- Dartmouth
- Duke
- Einstein/Montefiore
- Emory
- Geisinger
- Harvard/BIDMC
- Mayo Clinic
- Michigan
